16 pounds from the 100-pound mark?!? How much of that was pre-op?
Sorry, don't mean to be nosy (or to "discount" pre-op weight loss,
because it ALL counts the same)... but didn't you just have surgery in
March?

Amy,
I'm a bit behind in my e-mails, but thought I''d chime in. My guess would
be a hernia. For a couple reasons, immediate pain, but especially because
pushing on it relives the pain. If you had omentum or intestines popping
through it would be very painful, but pushing on it may be putting it behind
the omentum again, so no pain.
Get it checked out and good luck.

Re: i quit

San, I deinitely hear your frustration. Take a few days to mentally
recuperate if you need to (nothing wrong with that!), but then,
instead of giving up, maybe just cut back a bit. Give yourself a
break from the exercising one or two days a week. Perhaps taking some
(but not all) focus off of the exercise will make this stall easier to
bear, and you will still be able to maintain the muscle you currently
have. You may simply be exchanging fat for more muscle the past few
weeks.
Hang in there.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] i quit.....WALKING

2008-11-24 11:33:24

Walking (or running) 1 mile will lose you about 100 calories.
A 175 pound person has to walk about 35 miles to lose a pound.
A 125 pound person would have to walk about 49 miles to lose a pound.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] i quit

San,
Even if the scale isn't budging you ARE maintaining muscle mass by
exercising. (I have to remind myself of that frequently). We're in this for the
long run not just the short term so the exercise will help you to be healthier.
So go ahead and dust yourself off and get back to it. The scale may not behave
appropriately (Don't you wish we could put it on time out LOL) but you will feel
better. I'm on a plateau also and it is sooooooo frustrating. I'm trying to
focus on the lifestyle change rather than just on the weightloss. I hope your
scale starts to move soon.

strange pain

Not quite sure what I am trying to feel for, but the only thing squishy (I

of my 'rolls' of fat, and then I don't know. . but it HURT. . About calling the
dr., I have a follow-up with my surgeon in El Paso Thursday morning. I guess I
will address the issue with him then. Thanks for the advice, though.

Heartburn

Lisa A,
I have not had any heartburn since surgery. I was just thinking last
night how nice that is. I had a hiatal hernia and GERD before the
surgery and had many painful nights, even with meds. Now.....no
problem at all. (I am almost afraid to brag about that. It would be
miserable if that started again.)
See your PCP. Whatever it is should be addressed now before it
really gets painful.

Definately chew chew chew. My kids would make a game of counting how much I
chew my food. Generally it is 35-40 times. (Yeah, sometimes it is gross) But,
I learned like you that wolfing down dinner is not allowed anymore. I tossed up
many good meals because I would not relax. I hope that the soreness goes away
and you can get back on track. Every meal you dont have at this point is a big
step backwards. Try drinking some protein drinks so that you dont get sick.

My pouch has been very cranky lately. Everything I eat was casuing
pain and nausea. I finally talked to the nurse at the bariatric center

I've been eating too fast. The last time I ate anything was 2:00 yesterday
afternoon and my pouch is still sort of touchy. I couldn't even drink anything
last night. Hopefully today is better and I can learn to slow down.

Hernia Mesh

2008-11-21 10:11:24

Lora & Pat,
You are probably both right. My brother had this surgery done for
his alien soon after his GBS by the same surgeon. He actually had a
second surgery to insert the mesh. I was thinking though, that the
reason he had problems was that he had a lot of drainage from his GBS
scar for months after the surgery. My mind equated this with a worse
hernia than mine. I don't believe that the intestines push through
my abdominal wall, it's the abdominal wall that bulges from a
stretched fascia. Of course, now that I think about it, that's what
he also had..stretched fascia.
Well, maybe next time I can get the mons area beautified. I know I
need it, but I am hoping some of that area will improve when she
removes the panni area. I will just have to wait and see. Plus next
surgery....will NEVER be at JOHNS HOPKINS. Research...yes,
surgery...no!!!

Re: update on doctor visit...

Theresa,
I am sure you already mentioned this, but how long before you were
allowed to walk extensively, not just around the block? Was it right
away? No jogging or weights until about 6 weeks out? Is that what
your recommendations were? No bending or twisting because that
causes you to retain fluids now that your drains are out? Am I
reading this correctly? I know, I ask a lot of questions, but I want
to do this right.
Thanks for keeping us updated.

update on doctor visit...

2008-11-21 02:51:28

Hi everyone! Hope everyone is doing well and having a great day! Wanted to
update you on my doctor visit. For those of you who know and those of you who
don't, I had a tummy tuck and lipo done around the flank areas on April 1.
Yesterday was my 3 week checkup. My drain tubes(2) came out and it feels so
good not having those things around anymore! I am healing nicely...scar looks
good, swelling has gone done a lot, and the bruising is almost gone. I sitll
wear my binder all the time which has become past of my wardrobe. I have to try
and not bend and twist so much the next 3 weeks. Don't want to retain fluids in
the stomach area. And if all goes well in my nect check-up, I can begin to jog
(slowly at first) and weight train (light weights to begin) again. Now that is
something I am looking forward to doing! Never knew how much I would miss the
gym until I had this surgery. Good thing is I walk every day and it feels
wonderful! Take care everyone! Keep up the
good work in what you are doing!

Food that help your moods

2008-11-20 18:37:32

FEELING FOGGY?
If you're finding it hard to concentrate and feel like your mind is a
pile of goo, you may want to snack on some protein-rich foods. Foods
like cheese, soy products and lean meat are great for making you feel
alert, energized and ready to take on the day. So if your brain's
feeling a bit foggy, just nibble on some low-cal string cheese, a
veggie burger, or some lean skinless chicken or turkey breast. You
may be thinking more clearly in no time.
THE ULTIMATE MOOD LIFTER
A little chocolate can fix anything, right? It's sweet, delicious and
creamy, and it seems to make us feel a lot better once we've eaten
it. Well, it turns out chocolate's mood-boosting ability is not all
in our heads -- eating the sweet stuff really does make us feel
happy, content and soothed. Why? The fat, sugar, and high amounts of
tryptophan found in chocolate work together to raise serotonin and
endorphin levels in the brain. The result? Your mouth will be happy --
and so will the rest of you. Keep chocolate portions in check with a
6g-of-fat Trader Joe's 100 Calorie Milk Chocolate Bar (POINTSŪ value
3*).
STABILIZE MOOD SWINGS
Do you go from laughing to crying in a matter of seconds? Curbing
mood swings may be as easy as drinking water. That's because
dehydration can play a big part in emotional stability. If you don't
get those recommended 8 - 10 cups of water a day, you might just find
yourself sweatin' the small stuff. So drink up!
STOP FEELING SLUGGISH
Tired and lethargic all the time? Find it hard to get going in the
morning? You may want to whip up some scrambled eggs or an omelette.
That's because eggs are a great source of zinc, a substance that
makes you feel more awake, energized and engaged by helping to
regulate blood sugar. For an eggy fix without too much fat, check out
Egg Beaters with Yolk in original and flavored varieties -- a 1/4-cup
serving (the equivalent of 1 egg) has 40 calories and 1.5 - 2g fat
(POINTSŪ value 1*).
NIX NERVOUSNESS
Stressed? Nervous? Anxious? Soothe your nerves with some skim milk or
a handful of almonds. Both foods are rich in calcium, and calcium is
great for reducing anxiety and making you feel calm and relaxed. For
a portion-controlled almond fix, check out Blue Diamond's 100-calorie
packs (9g fat, 2g fiber, and a POINTSŪ value of 2*) -- there are 50mg
of stress-busting calcium in each pack. Or sip some Unsweetened
Vanilla Almond Breeze -- 1 cup has 40 calories, 3g fat, and 1g fiber
(POINTSŪ value 1*), and it serves up 20% the RDA of calcium.
SNACK HAPPY
Salmon and strawberries may be nature's equivalent of Prozac and
Zoloft. That's because folate-rich foods cause a boost in serotonin
levels in the brain, much like antidepressants do. So the next time
you're feeling depressed, grill some salmon, or treat yourself to a
bowl of strawberries. Chances are, you'll turn that frown upside down
in no time. BTW, a serving of Chicken of the Sea's canned pink salmon
mixed with a teaspoon of Vivi's Original Sauce in Classic Carnival
Mustard makes us VERY happy, and that snack has just 65 calories and
2g fat (POINTSŪ value 1*).
TAME YOUR TEMPER
Feeling angry? Reach for a grapefruit, some grapes, an apple or some
carrots! All four of these great-tasting foods are rich in pectin, a
soluble fiber that lowers blood cholesterol. Another plus? When
you're angry, your body kicks into fight-or-flight mode, causing your
heart rate, adrenaline levels and blood pressure to increase. But
pectin reverses these effects and helps your system return to normal.
Get a pectin fix with HG's Sweet 'n Chunky Chicken Salad -- it's
packed with grapes and apples, and a full cup has just 145 calories
and 1.5g fat, plus a gram of fiber (POINTSŪ value 3*).

In Florida for a few days

2008-11-20 10:10:56

Good Morning,
Tomorrow at 6AM my plane leaves for the Florida Keys. I will be there
until Sunday. The reason I am posting this is that we will have no
moderators until then with Ally on her honeymoon. I don't believe
there are any other moderators, except Jill and I think she no longer
visits this group. I don't have the ability to make anyone a
moderator while we're gone.
So if you are new, post a message by 9 PM tonight so that I can
approve you for posting while we are gone. I am sorry for the
inconvenience.
I just can't wait to get away. This is my first days off since my
surgery last August and I didn't ENJOY that time off AT ALL!!

Congratulations Lora! I was hoping to be one of those people who lose 100 lbs
in 6 months... but at the rate I am going now, I doubt I will make that. I
expect to be in onederland before that though!

Welcome Carol,
What do you have left to accomplish before your surgery? When do you
find out your actual surgery date?
You must be so nervous and excited at the same time. Please ask us
any question you may have. We are all willing to help you through

Lora,
You need plenty of well wishes today. The weight...almost to
ONEderland. That's great. You have lost so much faster than I have
that I am a little jealous. I mean....most of the things we have had
to deal with, we seem to be similar. But you certainly have been the
fast loser in our journey. I am happy with my weight loss,
especially since the alien removal will help.
I hope you get this job, they easily work around your surgery time,
it's for the type of work you want to do, and you love the people you
will work with. Good luck!!

Best of luck to you Lora.

Lora <cicerogirl@...
I have an interview this afternoon for a part-time therapist position
with one of the 2 large mental health agencies here. I have mixed
feelings about agency work -- some positions would be great, and
others would be horrible, based on my training, interests, etc. -- but
with my full-time job ending, and having a limited number of private
practice clients (since I am not on any insurance panels), I need to
do something. Unfortunately, I cannot work for an agency full-time
(couldn't pay my mortgage and student loans on what they pay since I
am single), but I am hoping he is interested and they have something
part-time that I can work around my other job for as long as that job
lasts.
Of course, having hernia surgery scheduled in May throws another fly
in the ointment, but they probably don't need to know about that yet!
Any and all prayers and/or positive energy appreciated...

cranky pouch

2008-11-18 08:54:04

My pouch has been very cranky lately. Everything I eat was casuing pain and
nausea. I finally talked to the nurse at the bariatric center yesterday. She
asked me about how it felt and described it exactly. Turns out I've been eating
too fast. The last time I ate anything was 2:00 yesterday afternoon and my pouch
is still sort of touchy. I couldn't even drink anything last night. Hopefully
today is better and I can learn to slow down.

make room in Onederland, because I'm coming!

2008-11-18 05:59:09

FINALLY, after three weeks, the scale moved again this morning (and in
the right direction, unlike last week's ALLEGED half-pound gain)! I
am a tad under 204 this morning, so just FOUR more pounds and I will
be in Onederland! I can't wait to move the little scale weight from
the 200 to the 150 mark!
I cannot TELL you how much I need the emotional lift that getting to
199 pounds will bring. I was expecting to get there before the end of
the month (and it would have been a cool 8-month surgiversary
present), but aparently my body had other ideas. Still, even if I go
back to the steady 2 lb/week pre-stall rate (with the occasional 3
pound week thrown in), I will be down at least 138 pounds by the time
they do the hernia repair on May 27th... which, I just realized, will
be my 9-month surgiversary to the DAY! 138 pounds in 9 months... I
can definitely live with that (and anyone who lost that much in 3 or 4
or 5 months (ugh) can just go away, lol).

I picked up some last night at Wallyworld but I'm unsure if I have the
correct dosage??? I bought the 1,000mg tabs but I was wondering if I
should have bought the 5,000mg tabs?
How often do you take it (recommended dosage on the bottle says 1x a
day with dinner).
I can take it back and get the higer dosage, but do I need to?
Thanks so much!

Hi all. Pat thanks for asking! I haven't posted because its been stressful. Well
no Travis yet, she is overdue if he doesn't come by friday they will induce.
Last thursday the kids were rear ended pretty bad, I took them both to hospital
josh has whiplash and britt has a backache but travis is fine, not even a car
accident made him come out! I had a terrible week w a migraine that would not
leave, I had to take kids to hosp. W my head pounding. Friday I took day off
because of head, and ended up taking car to body shop, picking up rental and
also going to get my migraine pills. So car is due to get fixed this week,
migraine finally calm down just hv stiff neck, no Travis, and I have a 2nd date
w Hector this saturday!! Travis hopefully won't mess with gmas love life by
showing up on saturday :)
Also my daughter is now 12 weeks along, her 2 year marriage is over and she was
so distraught she took a plane and went to ny! Right now she's with my sister at
an Inn relaxing and then my sister is taking her to florida to get a tan! A
little one of course. So that has also added to my stress. But today is a new
day and it will all be better.
My psyche appt is on wed. Finally, then just hv to wait on my surgery date.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] QUESTIONS??

2008-11-17 06:04:25

As with everything else... everyone is different. Some people took a month, or
even two off work (although many took more time than they needed because they
had the time off with pay), some only took a couple weeks... I took five days,
and that was only because there was a weekend and a drs appt in that time. I
work as an occupational therapist and am mostly on my feet.

I'm no HR expert, but if you have surgery and the surgeon indicates
that you will be unable to work for a certain period of time, your
height and weight should have NOTHING to do with it! Did your
surgeon fill out his/her portion of the paperwork?

Re: hesitant to part with clothes

2008-11-16 10:08:09

Lora,
I did have this problem but the group convinced me to part with
them. That, were I to gain weight, which I will NOT do, then I can
get some pleasure from shopping for new clothes. I am putting the
real wintery clothes that fit in the back of my closet. The ones
that fit right now, but it's getting too warm to wear. You know
those big thick sweaters. But I am inspecting them before I save
them....are they too bulky for my new body?....Will I really wear
them and enjoy them next year? Will it bother me to part with them
because I have had compliments? This is not quite the same as your
problem, because they fit right now and who knows what will happen in
the next year.
Lora, donate those items. Let that safety net go.

Re: The date for my alien removal is...

2008-11-16 10:02:39

Lora,
I was so glad when I read this post this morning. Isn't it wonderful
to have a date. After I had mine, I was torn between getting it a
little earlier, because I hate this thing and keeping the date so I
can lose as much as possible.
It's odd how our journeys have been somewhat similar seeing how it
doesn't seem that we are similar to anyone else. I am glad you are
going first so you can tell me how it goes. I was reading about the
procedure again yesterday trying to refresh my memory of what she
will be doing. She drew a picture and I just hope that she does a
better job with the scars than by GBS did. That's her job though.
The GBS scar is hideous with not only the wide and red areas, but the
twin dots where the staples were. Ugly, ugly, ugly.
Well, I am glad you have one item scheduled for removal/repair. I
hope your recovery is easy and pain free. Are you getting one of
those pain devises for the incision? I am...not a pain ball but
something similar.

QUESTIONS??

2008-11-16 05:23:49

I just recently got decline of short term disability because of
my "height to weight ratio", they said. Which is so crazy for a 21 yr
old. I dont understand that. Soon I will be having my surgery of
gastric bypass. I work in retail, which I stand on my feet 8 hrs a day.
My question is How long will I be out of work for this?? and be able to
do what I do at my job?? I have 2 weeks of vacation built up but since
this disability declined me has put me in a hole. I just wanna make
sure I will be ok on everything before I go thur with this. Just wanna
know the average time out of work with this surgery...
Thanks alot

We are leaning towards getting it. We left $1000 deposit but it will have
to be hauled and inspected before we make a final decision. It is a 27'
Albin and is 20 years old. But it is in excellent shape and very clean. It
sleeps 4 and has a tiny kitchen and a bathroom with a shower.
Here is a link to it if you want to see it. It is a great price because the
guy doesn't want to take the time to take it back to NJ from FL. You can
click on the pictures tab to look at it.

Welcome, Julie. Wow, I'm sorry you have had so many medical issues.
Glad you were finally able to get a WLS done, though. The only
protein I could tolerate easily for the first couple of months was
Unjury (www.unjury.com). (Well, there was anotehr one but it has
since been discontinued.) Now I also use Syntrax nectar protein
(twisted cherry... yum!)... it's like a fruit drink instead of a thin
shake consistency. One of the otehr group members also "turned me on"
to the Champion Nutrition Pure Whey Stack flavors.
Everyone's tasebuds are SO different, though... I would suggest goign
out tp www.vitalady.com and ordering bunch of samples. (She breaks
the tubs up into samples and sells them separately which is cheaper
than the prepackaged individual servings (and those aren;t available
for all types/flavors.... that way you can inexpensively find out what
YOU like and don't like.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] feeling much less depressed, but..

2008-11-12 04:55:58

Lora,
I agree with Lisa and Pat. I've been enjoying going out to eat allot
lately, I held myself up in my house for 3 -4 months after surgery, taking
it easy, learning what my pouch wants... now I'm ready to live again. One
meal at a restaurant feeds me at least 2 more times. I enjoy that too,
easier to plan the next days meals. I usually get protein, veges and mashed
pot's. I just have to make new vege's for the leftovers.
So enjoy the company, knowing you are in such a better place physically and
mentally then you were. Celebrate your new life !!!!!
Good luck dealing with the next week, we'll be here for you.

Hi all,
I'm so happy to tell all of you that today is the 4 year anniversary of my

I would see another spring. I remember after my first chemo sitting next to
my lilacs, looking at the tulips and daffodils, smelling that wonderful
spring smell, and wondering if I would ever expierence this again. Needless
to say working out in the gardens in the spring is at times overwhelming for
me, I am so blessed.
I hope your all having a great spring day!!

2008-11-11 13:49:25

Hi Karon, Dr. Stephen Haggerty in Highland Park, IL was my surgeon. I was
waaaaaaay too frustrated with the original surgeon that I chose. There was too
many steps and too many extra requirements. I also consulted with two moderately
large bariatric centers and they too wanted all this extra stuff that insurance
didn't require. After appealing for 4-5 months I was READY so I dropped them all
and found a surgeon who was willing to just do the darn thing! Grant it, he read
my file and made sure I had the psych eval and stuff and made sure I was ready
but he wasn't into all the rigamarole and spending months waiting for testing.
After seeing him, I was scheduled about one month later.

Second chances

2008-11-10 22:59:08

Hi to all...My name is Julie I had my surgery 4-15
after a year of taking care of all that was found while preopping.
...Hep C advanced stage with childs class a Cirrhosis, portal htn,
enlarged Spleen, thrombocytopenia;low platelet count, Tumor in
duodeum: lymphoma and a Right lower quadrant tumor. So the battle
began, 2 surgeries and alot of praying. And I can say I glad I'm on
the other side of it.
I was going to have a Regular RNY GBS; but because of the lymphoma in
my duodeum i can never close that area off from being veiwed by my
gastroenterologist. So the surgery was Vertgical Gastrectomy where
my doc cuts just the stomach into a banana like shape and staples it.
I am a Patient from LAPSF.com, Dr Cirangle my surgeon. He also
resected my Right lower quadrant tumor and did a liver bx as well.
I can not say enough He stuck it out all the way with me and I was
really a very risky patient. I live 50 miles north of Sac. So things
in SF are much more updated and possiblities endless compared to my
little town of MAYBerry...MARYSVILLE, CA.
I am doing well and now trying to find enough to eat this first 2 wks.
So does anyone have any protein drink or thick liquid Ideas??
Thanks for letting me share. Julie

They've got to be hanging like EIGHT+ inches longer from where they should be! I
am SO gonna need a breast lift or whatever its called and I still have 125
pounds to lose. I can now see my arms or where my arms should be. Its kinda nice
seeing the fat hanging like batwings but its kinda weird. Like most people, I
was hoping I wouldn't need plastics but I am SO gonna need it! I need to find a
second job pronto to pay for this.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] feeling much less depressed, but...

2008-11-10 05:08:36

Lora,
I think that having dinner with friend is still a totally acceptable way to
"deal" with this. Just like you have to move forward from the assualt, you need
to move forward with your life after WLS. I see nothing wrong with going out
and having soup and salad or a small piece of meat and veggies. You are
learning to cope with so much at once, I think instead of trying to tuck it all
in a place where you don't have to think about it, you need to incorporate it
all into your life and become free from it. I don't know, I am not a therapist,
but it seems to me that if you stare at something long enough, it no longer
holds the same appeal or disgust. (I am sort of thinking about violence in
youth in regard to the video games/movies they watch) You can always tell me to
take my elementary school psycho babble and take a leap if you want. :) I wont
be offended...I am just trying to be a friend.

I wanted to thank everyone who was so encouraging the past week or so
when I was feeling SO depressed. Finding the PS who is at least a
possibility for the panni removal (pending insurance approval and the
whole vein issue) and then getting the hernia repair scheduled makes
me feel a little better. I also decided that maybe I need to give up
on private practice (for now, anyway) and more actively pursue taking
a part-time position with an agency. I would really like to do crisis
work... either manning the crisis phone line or working in a hospital
doing preliminary ER psych assessments. So I am pursuing that
possibility. I have one client that I might have to continue workign
with for a while, though, until she is willing/able to see someone
else. I'm still stressed about how in the world I can have two
surgeries this summer AND look for both a new full-time job AND a new
part-time job.
Even though I am feeling a little better, this coming Saturday is the
"anniversary" of the assault. The anniversary gets a little easier
each year, but it's still always bad. One of my coping mechanisms for
previous years was to plan dinner with a friend (or several dinners
with several friends) and basically eat myself into numbess. (That's
exaggerating, but you know what I mean). I'm trying to be very aware
of everything I put in my mouth, and I had already re-instituted my
food journal since I have been in this annoying almost-to-Onederland
stall... so hopefully that will help. I just don't want to fall off
the wagon, so to speak, and have the 2 or 3 M&Ms turn into half the
bag. I'm actually more worried about carbs than sugar... it's the
carbs I really crave when stressd.

I should also add that the chike products are about 170 calories per

What is the website address? I would like to see what they have and what the
products offer. :)

Lora <cicerogirl@...
A while back, I ordered a sample pack of the Chike protein drinks
(pre-measured powder in a plastic bottle). The sample pack had 5
flavors: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, banana, and orange cream. I
was looking for something different taste-wise, and something for
on-the-go that didn't have to be refigerated.
The vanilla, strawberry, and orange creme were pretty good (the latter
tastes a little like a dreamcicle) and I REALLT liked the banana and
chocolate.
You can get the sample pack for $17, a set of 6 of one flavor for $21,
ro a tub for... well, a lot. It's expensive, but I can pass along a
25% off coupon code to anyone who is interested and that makes it much
more reasonable. Especially if you just want to try the sample pack.
I ordered another sample pack, 6 banana, and a tub of the chocolate
(nice and chocolately without being too sweet, to my taste buds
anyway). I figure I'll save and re-use the empty plastic bottles
(they very conveniently have the water fill line marked on them).
I have tried a few moore asmples of the Syntrax nectar protein powders
from Vitalady, and in addition to my favorite (twisted cherry), the
peach one was pretty good and the green apple was tolerable (I'll use
less water with the next sample pack, though, because the sour apple
flavor got really old really fast). There was a "lemonade" one that
gets a thumbs down from em, but others might like it. (At $2 per
sample, at least the price is right!)
Anyway, just some suggestions if you're looking for something
different for the summer.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] weight loss pains

2008-11-08 16:01:07

Lisa, there are two things that could be causing your back pain.... your knees,
and your weight loss. Anything that throws your spinal alignment off can cause
back pain. With knee pain, you may not be walking "normally", which could cause
it, and with weight loss, you are probably walking better... more straight
rather than that "waddle" that comes with obesity, which could also do it. Your
body was used to however you walked before, if anything changes that, it
objects.

Chiropractic can help, and some insurances do cover it... if they can show
medical necessity.

Re: weight loss pains

I have noticed occasional pain in my hips (both hips) when I walk.
Someone else here (Sharon??) mentioned the hip pain as well once upon
a time. It's not the kind of severe pain you're talking about, though.
I injured the area where my neck joins my shoulders (part of the
attack...) and my insurance does pay for a chiropractor, but I have to
pay a $30 co-pay for each visit. It's worth checking your coverage.
You might want to make a visit ot your PCP first, though, because
(s)he might be able to narrow down the problem for you and tell you
whether a chiropractor might help. I would DEFINITELY see SOMEONE,
though. You shouldn't have to endure that level of pain.

weight loss pains

2008-11-07 13:55:35

Am I the only one that has had odd pain post surgery? My knees are
shot - I understand that is normal, but my back is just killing me. It
feels like someone has compacted my whole spine into an inch space. It
is so bad that I am getting headaches from it. I have tried lounging
in a hot bath after i get the kids in bed but that does not seem to
work. I finally took 1/2 a pain pill last night and crashed. However,
this morning after a great nights sleep, I have the pain again. I am
thinking that I probably should see a chiropractor or something. Has
anyone else had this problem? What did you do for it? I don't want to
take a bunch of nonsense medicine for it! Do you think the insurance
company will pay for chiropracty? I have never had that done before but
somehow it seems to make perfect sense in this instance.
Thanks

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] hesitant to part with clothes

2008-11-07 03:13:18

Lora,
I think that it is REALLY important to get rid of the clothes. You deserve to
start fresh. I am not sure who I was discussing this with before, but I really
think that saving the old clothes is like a self-defeating prophecy. Get rid of
them. They will not serve you well - no matter how well they were priced or how
much you enjoyed wearing them at the time. You have made a significant
investment financially and emotionally in yourself so don't let a couple of
boxes of fabric and buttons hold you back from completing the course. If you
want to keep one thing to remind yourself where you came from, that is not an
issue - but keeping a wardrobe is not healthy.
Having the clothes taken in.....my mom keeps suggesting that to me. I suspect
when you get down to perhaps 1 size from goal that is ok. However when you are
talking size 28 to size 20 - they are remaking the outfits and it will cost more
than going out and purchasing something fresh that will make you feel new. It
will also keep the local tailor fron hating you. Oh, new clothes can mean new
to you. Previously owned things are a great idea at this stage in weight
loss....I refuse to purchase anything full price or spend the money taking
things in because I will not be in them for too much longer. I love

So far I have lost 40 pounds!!

hesitant to part with clothes

2008-11-05 20:56:10

I am FAR from a fashion maven or a clothes horse. I like conservative,
classically tailored, decent quality clothing. I'm not one for
clothing fads of any kind. Some of the 3x and 4x stuff was kind of
cheap, but those are now all gone.
I have several boxes full of clothing that I need to take to Goodwill
or wherever, but I also have some items in my closet that are way too
big, but I am hesitant to part with them. They are things that were
moderately priced (although I guess that's a relative term) and that I
really like. They are winter dresses, though, and there's no way they
can even be tailored down from a 26 or 28 to whatever size I will be
NEXT winter (I'm a 20-ish now, but that includes the alien and panni
as well as the remaining 60 pounds I need to lose.) I keep taking
them out, adding them to one of the donation boxes and taking them
back out again!
I have some cute summer dresses and skirt/top combinations that I can
now wear again (whihc is fun... or will be once the weather stays a
little warmer), but I am just SO reluctant to get rid if those couple
of dresses. I'm tempted to keep the one I like best and add it to the
jeans, sweater, and sweatshirt that I saved as my here's-where-I-was
"fat" clothes (and for an "after" picture).
I'm sure there's something more at work here... something
psychological... or maybe not (occupational hazard)...
Anyway, anyone else have this happen?

Californians don't you all see this as a bit ironic... so many people all over

Tuesday, May 27th at 10:45 am! (Yay!) I did take a picture of it
when I was in the bathtub about a week ago, so I will always have a
photo of it (ever tired to take a photo of your whole tummy in the
bathtub without getting an indecent parts in the picure...?!?!? LOL)
but I am ready to get rid of it! (I'd rather be getting rid of the
panni first, but hey...) So... Lizanne and I will be recovering
(AGAIN!) at the same time. (Except she gets a TT, too.)
According to the surgeon's assistant, the incision will be anywhere
from 3-4 inches up to the full length of the bypass incision (it
started out at 8 inches, but now that my tummy is much smaller, it's
probably only 6), the mesh may be placed over the miuscle or under it
(I didn't quite understand what would dictate her choice of where to
put the mesh), and if there is any internal fat that gets in the way
of the repair, she will likely just remove it. I will stay overnight
in the hospital but will probably be released late the next afternoon.
Recuperation is 4-6 weeks. According to one of her otehr pateints who
had opne RNY and a hernia repair, she will probably go right through
the RNY incision. (Lets hope the hernia repair incision looks/heals
better.)
So... only 6 weeks until the alien is history. I feel better havign a
date to get at least ONE of the things fixed. I wonder how long I
won't be able to ride my recumbent bike...?
