[WLS Friendship & Support] Goodbye My Friend

I told my husband he could get remarried if I died, but my children would NOT
call her mom, mother, or anything like it.
Pauleen
maria murdza <comurd@...
Hey Judy, Bonnie and all-
I thought I was he only one! I wrote out a "will" told my husband where the
insurances were, what to pay off with it, how much will be left and what to do
with it, etc.... Judy, Honey, we are/were all scared. And myself for few
reasons. I was scared that I would die as a result of being overweight and un
healthy, afraid I would die from complications from surgery and I am still
afraid that I could still screw this up and it not working after a while. This
is a HUGE undertaking all the way around. So to even consider it, prepare for
it and make the commitment to go through with it takes COURAGE. And all of
you/us should be proud of yourselves/ourselves for taking the steps to do this
and to know you are NOT ALONE! So Judy girl, I am a phone call a way! you have
my number!
You are now one day closer to that healthy lifestyle you DESERVE and have worked
so hard for!
Take care! God Bless!

I think our bodies are craving what we need. I now love red meat and salt.
I would never eat salt before, I used to avoid it at all costs.
I wonder how many people take Pepcid? I'd prefer to not take anything
unless I need to, guess I'll be asking.
Thanks for not sending beef broth on our tea exchange :0)

About Tylenol

2008-07-30 11:47:43

I should have read your post more thoroughly before posting back.
About Tylenol. I bought the liquid but never took it, and I bought the
chewable kind (YUCK!), but really early on post-op I was taking the
Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gels. They dissolve really fast!

Edie,
I take Extra Strenth Tylenol and I have also taken the Tylenol cold and flu. .
Anything for colds that have tylenol in them is ok. . As far as antibiotics,
make sure before you have them ordered that the doctor knows you have had this
surgery. .Extended release wont work as well. . You should be fine with most
antibiotics once the doctor knows. I take the caplet form of tylenol and cold
products. Hope that helps

Re: approved antibiotics

Edie,
The pills should be okay as long as you don't get anything timed-
released. I have not been sick since my surgery so I can't tell you
about antibiotics. Tylenol never worked for me so I was thinking that
if I catch a cold, I am in trouble.
I hope your cold passes quickly.

approved antibiotics

2008-07-29 09:33:05

Help!!
I've just come down with a bad cold or the flu :( I'm looking for what
drugs are good for my pouch, in the files section. I've got my tylenol
and benedryl, but I was checking on antibiotics that are approved in
case I need them in the next couple of days, (pretty sure I will) and I
didn't see anything beyond no tetracyclin. Are there any updates?
Another question, do you take tylenol pills or liquid? My husband got
liquid but it's for kids, I'm taking it but wonder if adult pills are
ok for me. I'm 4 months out.
Thanks for your help.

2008-07-28 18:12:55

After staying at the same weight for a few days, I started dropping a
pound a day for the past three days... yipee!! Now if only this could
keep up! LOL
If I lose another two pounds by Thursday, that will be an average of
5lbs a week. Not bad... but I was averaging 6lbs a week until my
standstill. I want sooooo bad to be in onederland... but that is
probably a couple months away. Oh well... I remember when my surgery
was nine months away, and that time flew!
Pat

Re: another pound!

Yeah, Pat! It won't be long before you get to onederland! Just keep
doing what you're doing and don't worry about the average! Each week
is going to vary, especially once you get further out.
I can't believe it's 6 weeks already since your surgery - holy cow!

Lisa,
My nut & dr require me to take the pepcid 1st thing in the am, then nothing
for 15 min. so that can't change. Do you take Pepcid??? They said I have
to do it for life. Why is there such a time constraint around iron, does
our body absorb anything for that long?? When I left the hospital I was
anemic (I had a bleed post op and had they not thought I was a Jehovah's
witness, I would have had a transfusion), I started iron immediately twice a
day, then when I could eat "normal food" I was told to eat red meat every
day and go down to one iron a day. At my last visit (4 weeks ago) my
hemoglobin was only .2 away from finally being in the normal range, so I
must be doing something good, with my iron at least, and I do take C with my
iron.

heart to heart (all I have at home right now) 110 cal (3/4 C serving) 1.5 g
TOTAL fat, 90 mg sodium, 15 g Carbs, 5 g TOTAL fiber, 5 g sugar, 5 g protein.
I eat about 1/2 c. along w/ 2 oz of carb and sugar control vanilla Dannon
yogurt. MMMMM, yummy. I am full all morning. I have to force myself to eat my
AM snack.
There is another cereal that is lower in the sugar, but I do not like it as

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Weight & Blo

2008-07-27 01:25:00

I know about the routine thing. Sometimes a few hours go by and I miss
something. But for the most part I'm doing good. When I do take my vit's I
try to give them 15-30 min's with nothing else in my system, to try to give
them more time to absorb. Is that crazy or sane??? I'm only 4 months out
so I have not had any labs to tell me how my body's doing. But sometimes I
wonder if I'm getting to much. What do you think about my line up. I wake
up and take a sub lingual pepcid, then baratric advantage chewable iron and
C, then I have a protein shake with a baratric adv.multi, zinc, D and
coramega fish oil w/coQ10, around lunch I take a b complex and b12 sub
lingual, later in the afternoon I take a baratric adv. calcium chew, then
with dinner another multi. Again every time I take something I try to give
it 15-30 min's alone in my system.
What do you girls think about what I'm taking, do you think it's to
much...am I missing something. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
Edie

Lizanne,
Try the kashi bars. They are fabulous. My favorite and the honey nut flax

it. I do not like the chocolate ones anymore either. I tried an Atkins

Keep the clothes?

2008-07-25 16:31:55

Thank you all for your encouragement. You are right...I need to send
those clothes away. I never plan to be this fat again. I guess I
have been so used to failure in every "diet" I have used that I am
just getting ready for this to fail also. Truly, I am very scared
this will fail. As you know I eat no flour or sugar. And although
this does not bother me now, I wonder if I can do it for the rest of
my life...not just a few months after surgery. I also know that
my "tool" has some faults. Not ever feeling full and not dumping on
sugar or fats, has left me a little desperate. Thank goodness for
the malabsorption.
Thanks all for reminding me that I have done the right thing for
months now without suffering (once I got past the first couple of
months, oh, and the hair loss). Now even chocolate protein bars are
starting to taste yukky. I am going to stick to the fruity ones.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Pat -- Vet

2008-07-25 11:37:52

That is pretty far... but will keep it in mind in case I can't find anyone
better.

My dogs are not in my good graces right now... I thought I was being a good
mommy to my cockatiels by buying them new toys, but apparently I didn't latch
the cage properly and one of them ventured out. I was in the other room
watching a video when I heard ungodly screeching and ran to where they all
were. The dogs had one of my tiels cornered on the floor, and there were
feathers everywhere!!! I was sure they mortally wounded it, but thankfully it
was just all feathers lost...not even any blood. He was a bit traumatized for a
while, sitting on the floor of the cage facing the corner for hours, but he is
back to begging for head scratches. Whew!

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Slow Weight Loss

2008-07-24 23:24:20

I think we do Sharon. It seems to go no where for a the longest time and then
suddenly 10 pounds falls off. I can not understand it. There are times I feel
like my scale is broken.
Lizanne, do you really want that mindset to start now about keeping the big
clothes. It is one thing to keep something from when youstarted to remind
yourself of all you have done, but I think it is self defeating to say, I really
like these jeans and there is a chance that I will start gaining weight again so
I better keep them. I think it will be more painful to have to spend another
dollar buying clothing in a bigger size later on. I think that it will help you
keep in check too. I don't want any clothes in my house now that I can be lazy
and gain a few pounds and wear....it just leads to going back in the wrong
direction. (That of course is my opinion, and we all know that I am somewhat
anal with what I allow myself anyway) Oh, and yes, I am terrified that I will
get fat again....at this point, fat is not even 278 pounds anymore...it is
anything over 165 pounds. I finally look like a reasonable human (when
clothed), I don't want to go back.
Lisa A
lizanneflowers <lizanneflowers@...
Sharon,
This weekend I was getting clothes ready for AMVET (they were winter
clothes that I knew no one would take from this group because none of
you will be that BIG next winter). I had a huge couple of piles.
But as I was putting them in boxes and bags, I decided to keep some
for myself in case I got bigger again. That was a big change from
when I gave away 13 bags of clothes because I KNEW I would never be
that big again.
I think I am getting really truly worried that I am at the end of my
weight loss and just in case I gain some back, I had better keep some
of those clothes I like. Does anyone else get that feeling?

Jen,
You have the right attitude. Most people want to rush through the
preliminaries to get right to the surgery. You are right to take the
time to learn all you can before sugery. It means so much more. And
you are right again, this surgery is a life altering change that will
effect you as long as you live. Find your answers and be prepared.
It can be tough or not, but it is definately not the easy way out in
the long haul.

Weight & Blood

2008-07-23 18:44:22

Dawn,
Thanks for noticing. I have been afraid to say anything about it,
almost like if I acknowledge it, it will disappear. Isn't that
really dumb. My whole body hurts from the additional exercising I
have been doing. I am getting more flab in my belly, which I am
happy about, since that will get removed when I have my "alien"
surgery. I may not be losing much in pounds, but I can notice the
difference in my body.
Speaking of my alien...I went to my PCP yesterday to get the results
of my blood tests (FINALLY) and to get a full physical. I told him
about my hernia and while I was laying on the table, I had to use my
abs for something. He jumped!!! Wow, he said, that is an amazing
hernia. So we laughed about Halloween and how it could be made up to
scare the kiddies. Pretty funny. He was definately impressed.
Then I had a hot flash while laying on that same table and the paper
that we have to lay on, stuck to my body. I was so embarassed. He
was upset about it, so while I got dressed I heard him out in the
office area asking why the paper was so thin and that needed to get a
better grade so his patients weren't so uncomfortable. I thought
that was pretty cool.
But the best part was the results from my blood tests. I was worried
about 3 things...cholesterol, B12 and calcium. I knew I had figured
out the protein, so that didn't worry me. My HDL was 56, over 50,
yeah...my LDL was 98, under 100, yeah...my B12 is supposed to be in a
range where the high number is 911 and mine was 1150 (need to take
less meds) and finally my calcium was in the over highest level
also...11.50. No blood problems. I am so releaved.
So I guess I have finally, after 6 months, figured out what my body
needs. It's about time.

You and I are in the same boat on that weight gain... I did get down to 167
but am back up to almost 175 again. I have started to exercise again but
with not working this week, I am tending to graze more. I did increase my
water today so hoping that will help too.
I found the Email for my NUT from KY so I am going to write her and see if
she can give us answers to these problems we are having. I will see if she
wouldn't mind I give it to you guys too so she can try and answer the
plaguing questions about the weight gain we are going through if anyone is
interested in writing her.

Hi April, and welcome :)
I'm happy that you joined us here... now we have two members from my
birthplace!
I had the surgery Feb 7 and have lost 35 lbs in 7 weeks. I think it's
actually a bit more than that because I can tell from my ankles I am retaining
water. I am going to work on flushing it out today and hope to see some change
in the scale tomorrow! Any weight that you lose is going to give you more
energy... just imagine if you were carrying those pounds in your hands while
trying to do stuff!
I had my surgery at a military hospital too... and it took 9 months and 1 week
from the DIGMA (that's what the army calls that group seminar you have to
attend). It will be interesting to see how long it takes you. Do you know how
long it took Jess?

Wow, I got a deal on mine... it was around $29,000! It's probably
just the difference between rates in the midwest and elsewhere, but
now I'm wondering if surgeons charge different amounts based on
whether the surgery was lap or open...

price tag

2008-07-20 02:27:53

I just checked my insurance website. They are processing the claim for my
surgery now. It was $37,185.75. Some one who's had the surgery told me it's
about $40,000, but it didn't really sink in. I am so glad my insurance is
covering it. They will most likely write off a big chunk.

great news!!!

2008-07-19 19:49:50

(1st) Well, things are finally turning for me here in Sunny Florida. I got
a FT job and I start next week. It went through an employment agency who
contacted me because they found my resume on monster.com. I called her back
Monday this week, had 2 interviews on Tuesday, one with the employment
agency and they sent me right over to interview with the company. It is at a
call center that calls patients to see if they want to become members with
MDVIP which is a program the doctors sign up for and it reduces their
patient levels from say 2000 to 3000 people down to 600 total. The patients
pay $1500 a year for concierge service from the doctor. They get the
doctors cell phone number, their beeper number, and Email address to contact
him any time day or night with questions or concerns. They also get same
day appointments, etc. It is offered to all doctors from what I was told.
Anyway, within 5 minutes or so after the 2nd interview was over, I received
a call from the employment agency and they offered me the position. I
originally wasn't suppose to hear until today to see what decisions they
made. I was thrilled because the starting salary is $14.00/hour with
bonuses every month and all the OT I want. My hours will be from 12:30 to 9
Monday through Friday which gives me time in the morning for my exercises
(which I started again today BTW), or doctors appointments, etc. I get full
benefits at 3 months. I am technically listed with the employment agency
for 2 weeks to make sure everyone is happy then I am picked up as a FT
employee. How cool is that?? I am thrilled because I can finally see a
silver lining to my dark cloud. :-)
(2nd) I have a new man in my life. His name is Alan, 53, very cute and
lives in NJ... I know.. the distance thing... we are going to deal with that
when the time comes. I was told about a new website to join called
www.fusion101.com which is a Christian website and free. You post your
information on there, and you can contact anyone you wish to without a
monthly fee. They do say donations keep them going but I haven't been able
to yet. He is an engineer and working in Africa right now and won't be back
for 8 weeks but that gives us more time to talk and find out about each
other. We are not rushing into anything either... he is a widowed dad with
a 17 yr old girl going to college in NJ. If anyone would like to see a
picture of him, let me know and I will send it to you :-) He was born in
Denmark and moved to the states a couple of years ago when his wife died of
Cancer. I feel alive again knowing this man and even if nothing did come of
it, he has shown me that I am able to feel again. I am thrilled beyond
belief!!!!!
As for my weight... it is still playing with me but now that I am back into
exercising and work finally, I will be able to get refocused on what is
important... ME... lol.

Goodbye My Friend - To Judy

2008-07-19 08:24:17

Hi Judy-
I had the exact same feelings you're having before surgery. I will be a year
out in one week and I will say that I believe these feelings have
intensified for me over time. I know I am not alone. I have a girlfriend who
will be 2 years out in August and just the other day she and I were sitting on
my front porch lamenting the fact that we miss food so much. We both agreed in
the end that we're still happy we went through with the surgery (I have lost 101
pounds (yes, just hit the century club today) and she has lost well over 200).
However, I don't believe that I will ever stop missing food. Now that I can eat
a little more (about 4 oz at each meal) I have to be careful that I am not
eating too much. I have to be constantly vigilant about it. As a matter of
fact, I ate at Longhorn yesterday and the minute I got up I knew I was TOO
full. However, for the first time since surgery my body didn't reject it. I
felt way too full for
about 20 minutes and then it passed. That scared me. I know that I am at the
point now where I have to start watching myself and that is fine. I'm up for
the challenge. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is this...when I decided to have
this surgery my biggest fear was not complications or dying...it was giving up
food. I mourned it before the surgery and I still go through periods of
mourning it even now. Although I can eat at least a bite or two of anything that
I truly love, I like you, will always miss the feeling of being able to eat with
"gusto". I will not, however, ever miss where it took me.
I hope it helps you to know you're not alone. I wish I could tell you that it
gets easier over time, but so far for me it hasn't and I love you too much to
lie to you.
Summary: Still happy I had the surgery, still miss food (and always will), but
I'll never miss the person I was 101 pounds ago.~Ally~

Jenn,
You definately have the right attitude. Sometimes it's hard to wait for
things to happen but using that time to prepare mentally and physically is so
helpful. I had to wait a year and I really felt prepared and ready. I wasn't
nervous at all but was excited it was finally happening. This group is great at
preparing you for the surgery. Good luck on this journey you are starting on.

Hi guys,
Well I had my first meeting last night. It was a welcome meeting to the program
- they discussed the different surgeries and expectations and such. Nothing I
didn't already know. They also discussed insurance coverage which I found to be
very beneficial. I have MVP and apparantly they will cover the surgery after
I've tried 6 months of some weight loss drug. I guess it's a new thing that they
just started doing. So we shall see how things go.
Now I have to wait 2-3 weeks before I hear from the secretary to schedule my
initial visit. Then it could be 1-2 months before the initial appt. and then it
will be between 6-9 months before surgery.
I'm actually glad for the time between. This is a life altering event. I want to
learn everything I can so I can be successful with this tool and lose this
weight for good.

hving normal feelings and it actually is to my benefit to mourn and to keep it
fresh so I know why I am doing this. I walked 1.8 miles yesterdat w/o a problem
and it felt good to be able to do it. I am now down 31 lbs and I am at the store
looking for large (for now) and mediums (for ltr) very very odd feeling and xl/
16/18 pants/ stretchy for transition. Too unimaginable!
So that makes me remember 1 reason I am doing this!

Llse,
Check your policy to see what the requirements are. If you met the
requirements for the surgery, then you can appeal it. But start with your
policy first to see what it says. Denials aren't easy to cope with that is
for sure. I was happy when mine went through but I had BCBS federal through
Aetna.
Good Luck,

Joan,'
I had BCBS Federal through Aetna and I didn't have any problems getting
approval. Yes, I had a few co-morbitities and didn't have to go through the
6 month weigh in either. I would make sure you follow what they tell you to
do. Also check the policy for any amendments in the back that would
stipulate anything needing to be done. Make sure all your "T's" are crossed
and your "i's" are dotted. Don't sweat it unless they tell you otherwise.

Sorry... trying to catch up on all of yesterday's messages... Sharon,
I am SO happy that you are finally "unstuck"! We knew it would
happen eventually, and I have to say that I'm impressed that you were
able to stay so positive (at least publicly) while you were waiting
for the scale to move again.
Lisa, I can only say what everyone else has -- you look FABULOUS! An
amazing transformation in such a short period of time!
Debby, I can understand how frustrating it must be to never feel
full, to be able to eat so much more than you expected, and to have
to fight cravings earlier than expected. (I have had more cravings
than I expected since my appetite returned, and even thoiugh I knew
that I was goign to have to deal with the psychological part of the
obesity problem, it IS frustrating to have to work on it while you're
still trying to get the food/vitamin/water/exercise routine in
place.) Don't beat yourself up over the pizza. Just focus on doing
what you need to do (I have to second what others have said about the
Kashi bar for breakfast... some kind of solid protein would be
better)... because all you CAN do is follow the "rules" and make any
adjustments that your surgeon or nutritionist feel would benefit
you. I'm sorry you're so frustrated. Hang in there.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Plastic Surgery Questions

2008-07-16 19:36:29

Lizanne,
I did start walking about three weeks after my LBL, but my surgeon told me
to give it another week to give my torso a chance to recover. So I started
walking my commute (2.78 miles to and from work daily) about 1 month after my
surgery. I wore a binder for the first couple of weeks and then a girdle
which I hated at first, but ended up liking for the contouring it gave me, and
now I still wear it and I am 2.5 months out from my surgery.
My surgeon did say that I should wait 6 - 8 weeks before going back to the
gym so I froze my membership for exactly two months and then went back the
beginning of March. I did not use or do any arm exercises as I had a
brachioplasty along with my LBL.
That's my experience, hope it helps.

I have also learned to make shakes with yogurt (I use the light and fit kind),
protein powder, ice and a little bit of water. The yogurt has about 4g of
protein and the powder I use has 23g per scoop. It makes a really tasty
snack...and I would THINK that yogurt would be considered full liquid when mixed
with ice and water.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] More questionssss..lol

2008-07-16 13:15:23

Joan, I don't know about BSBC because I have HMO, but my program did require a
record of past weight loss efforts (diet, weight lost, weight regained, year)
and prior medical info so they could trace weight, for me it wasn't too bad
because I've always had same HMO and I go alot so they had records. I do not
know if all insurances require this info. I hope for your sake they don't so
that you can get approved.

More questionssss..lol

2008-07-16 02:20:29

Me again!!
1) Now Im getting worried. I guess I havent even thought of being denied. Is
there any hints along the way that you might get denied for surgery? I have BSBC
of MN. I have talked to them, and am doing all they require. Only thing the doc
said that worried me is, that they need to be able to trace back to see your
weight. I umm..am bad about going to the doc and I think my last doc visit,
before starting this, was maybe 5 yr ago. I am 5'4 and weigh 278lbs, no other
issued YET ( such as bp, diabitcs etc), but my BMI alone qualifies me. Gosh to
think I have my heart set on August, and then to get denied? To those that is
has happened to, I so feel for you!!!!!!
2) breast issues after surgery. I had breast reduction surgery abut 5 yrs ago.
Best thing I have ever done!! They removed 4 lbs from each breast. Only thing
is, my surgeon did not remove skin from the sides, I forget what her reason was.
Now I basically have 4 breast, 2 where they should be and one under each arm.
Ive read that we sometimes lose weight in our breast with weight lose, what Im
wondering is, any chance I will lose the side crap? I think once Im lost weight,
I would like to have this redo and remove alot of that darn skin.
Thanks in advance!!!

Plastic Surgery Questions

2008-07-15 17:06:20

I know my surgery is still far in advance for my TT and
panniectomy...6/2/08...almost 10 more weeks. My weight loss has been
sporatic at best these past 2 months, although I lost 4 lbs last
week, the first weight loss since 2/19/08. I just hope that it
wasn't some fluke. But, back to my topic. I just received the STD
forms back from my PL and she says now that I will miss 6 weeks of
work and can do no belly exercises for the same period of time. I
can hardly believe I am going to write this, but NO EXERCISE for 6
weeks!!!! How will I maintain my weightloss?
So, I need to know from any of the ladies who had similar surgeries,
can you walk the treadmill as soon as you can stand without too much
pain? I know that now, my belly pounds with each step I take. Did

Lisa,
On that vain of vanity sizing (no pun intented), I have some old clothes
that I am mostly out of, but I have an old pair of Kakies (sp), they are a
size 20, I love them. If I had to guess I'd say their over 15 yrs old.
I've never gotten rid of them, they are a size 20 and I cannot zip them,
ironically I have bought size size 16 Capri's (2 pair), size 18 pants (2
pair) and one size 20's that are getting big. ANYWAYS, it amazes me that
the 20's from years ago still do not even zip, yet I have Capri's that I
just bought that are 16's. My husband thinks that this is all vanity
related. It's probably sad but true, I'd prefer to believe that they were
sized wrong years ago LOL.

Mary,
the B12 isn't absorbed by your stomach very well, that is why it is recommended
to take them under your tonque. after surgery we don't have the intrinsic (sp)
factor in our stomach to break down and absorb the B12. I use the Rexall brand.
They taste good and melt fast.

Some Exercise Suggestions

2008-07-15 00:03:25

We are all different, but if you are sure you have the doctor's
permission, here are some exercises that may tone particular areas of
interest.
ABDOMINALS
Because the abdomen has many different muscles the best way to tone
up this area is to perform several different types of exercises,
including:
Leg Raises
Lie on your back with your legs extended straight up.
Rest your arms by your sides or underneath your buttocks.
Keeping your lower back on the floor, lower your legs slowly to a 45-
degree angle, then return your legs to the starting position for a
count of 5 seconds.
For beginners, do one set of 8 - 10 repetitions.
If you're more experienced, do 2 - 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions each.
Side Twist
Lie on your back with your hips and knees bent at a 90-degree angle.
Place your hands behind your head, with your elbows on the floor.
Bring your right elbow toward your left knee, and extend your right
leg at the same time. (You should be bending from the waist with your
left elbow on the ground).
Hold for 1 second, then return to the starting position. Complete the
set on one side before you go to the other side.
For beginners, do one set of 8 - 10 repetitions.
If you're more experienced, do 2 - 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions each.
ARM JIGGLE (Alias Batwings)
The backs of your arms store fat, but with the right moves, triceps
also shape up faster than most other body parts. Here are some tips
that can help:
Press-Downs
Stand with rubber tubing (sold at sporting-good stores) draped around
neck.
Grasp so elbows form a 90-degree angle.
Keeping elbows pressed to your sides, slowly straighten arms by bring
your hands down in front of you.
Hold for 2 seconds, then return to the starting position.
For beginners, do one set of 8 - 10 repetitions.
If you're more experienced, do 2 - 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions.
Bicep Curl
Hold a dumbbell (2-3 lbs) in both hands, arms extending down at your
side, with your palms facing your hips.
Keeping your elbows close to your body, curl the dumbbell toward your
shoulders - either simultaneously, or alternating one arm at a time.
Lower the dumbbells to the starting position in a slow, controlled
manner.
For beginners, do one set of 8 - 10 repetitions.
For experienced, do 2 - 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions each and use 3 -
5 -lb dumbbells.
More experienced exercisers may also want to add the following
exercise to tone that underarm area.
Chair Dips (my 99 lb SIL does these daily & says they are great)
Sit on the end of a sturdy chair, and grasp the edge of it with the
palms of your hands.
With your legs fully extended, place your feet straight out in front
of you with your heels on the floor so that your weight is being
supported by your arms.
Using your arms, lift yourself up from the chair and then lower your
body as a unit toward the ground until your arms exceed a 90-degree
angle.
Hold for 2 seconds, then return to the starting position.
Do 2 - 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions.
BACK
Back Extension
Lie face-down on the floor with your hands at your sides, next to
your hips.
Not using your arms, slowly raise your shoulders and chest off the
floor about 4 - 6 inches.
Hold for 1 second, keeping your lower body relaxed and your head in
line with your upper body.
For beginners, do one set of 8 - 10 repetitions.
If you're more experienced, do 2 - 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions.
BUTTOCKS
Pelvic Lifts
Lie on your back, with your legs bent and both feet flat on the
floor, hip-width apart. Rest your arms at your sides.
Pressing down your heels, raise your hips several inches off the
floor.
Squeeze your butt muscles together at the top of the movement, then
relax them on the return towards the floor.
For beginners, do one set of 8 - 10 repetitions.
If you're more experienced, do 2 - 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions each.
Side Leg Lifts
On your hands and knees, keep your right leg bent at 90 degrees, and
raise it to the side leading with your knee.
Hold for 1 second, then lower to starting position.
For beginners, do one set of 8 - 10 repetitions, then switch legs.
If you're more experienced, do 2 - 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions each,
then switch legs.
Donkey Lifts
On your hands and knees, bring your right knee to your chest; then
kick back, leading with the heel of your foot. Do not arch your back.
Straighten your right leg behind you, lifting it out and up -
squeezing your buttock muscle.
Bring knee back to chest.
For beginners, do one set of 8-10 repetitions, then switch legs.
If you're more experienced, do 2-3 sets of 8-10 repetitions each,
then switch legs.
More experienced exercisers may also want to add the following
exercise to help tone up the buttocks:
Lunges
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, and your knees slightly
bent.
Place your hands by your side or out in front of you, for balance.
Step forward, bending your front leg.
Hold for 2 seconds while squeezing your buttocks, then return to the
starting position.
Do 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions per leg.
LEGS, THIGHS & HIPS
Inner-Thigh Leg Lifts
Lie on your right side, resting your head on your right arm.
Bend your left leg to form a 90-degree angle at the hip and knee.
Lift your right leg straight up off the floor no more than 6 inches
off the floor for about 10 seconds then lower it.
For beginners, do one set of 8 - 10 repetitions on each side.
If you're more experienced, do 2 - 3 sets of 8 - 10 repetitions each

Macronutrients - Maximize Your Knowledge

Macronutrients - Maximize Your Knowledge
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the body's main energy source, supplying 4 calories
per gram. Carbohydrates are found in many foods and beverages
including cereal, bread, rice, pasta, milk, vegetables, fruits, fruit
juices, table sugar and honey. Carbohydrates are built from sugar
units, and are classified as either simple carbohydrates or complex
carbohydrates.
Simple carbohydrates are made up of one or two sugar units. They are
found in sweet foods and drinks such as fruits, fruit juices,
sweetened cereals, desserts, soft drinks, jam, syrup and table sugar.
Complex carbohydrates are made up of many sugar units. They are found
in starchy foods such as cereal, potatoes, pasta, beans and
vegetables.
Dietary fiber is a type of complex carbohydrate that passes through
the body without being digested. Fiber is found in whole grain
cereals and breads, dried beans and peas, fruits and vegetables.
There are two types of dietary fiberinsoluble and soluble. Insoluble
fiber promotes regularity by adding bulk to the stool, which helps it
pass more quickly through the body. Insoluble fiber is found in foods
such as bran cereals, whole-wheat bread, fruits and vegetables.
Soluble fiber slows digestion, which helps minimize spikes in blood
glucose, and helps lower blood cholesterol. Soluble fiber is found in
foods such as oatmeal, barley, beans, peas and many fruits and
vegetables.
Protein
The body breaks down the protein we eat into amino acids, which
build, repair and maintain body tissues. The body needs protein for
healthy growth and development, and to make hormones, antibodies,
enzymes and tissues. Protein is found in meat, poultry, fish, milk
products, grains and beans, and supplies 4 calories per gram.
Fats
The body needs dietary fats for proper growth and development, a
healthy nervous system and skin, to aid the absorption and transport
of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K through the blood, and to store
energy in the body. Fats are made up of a mix of saturated and
unsaturated fats. All fats supply 9 calories per gram.
Saturated fats are solid at room temperature and mainly found in
animal foods such as fatty cuts of meat, whole milk, cheese, ice
cream, butter, cream and lard. Tropical oils (palm oil, palm kernel
oil, and coconut oil) also contain higher amounts of saturated fat.
Eating too much saturated fat increases risk of heart disease by
raising total cholesterol and LDL ("bad") cholesterol.
Unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and mainly found in
plant foods. There are three types of unsaturated fats:
polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and trans fats.
Polyunsaturated fats are found in corn, soy and safflower oils,
sunflower and sesame oil and seeds, walnuts, flaxseed, and fatty fish
such as salmon. Monounsaturated fats are found in canola, olive and
peanut oils, peanuts, almonds and avocados. Polyunsaturated and
monounsaturated fats are considered healthful choices because they do
not raise LDL cholesterol and help replace saturated fats in the diet.
Trans fats are formed when unsaturated liquid plant oils are
partially hydrogenated, a process which makes them more solid and
similar to saturated fats. Trans fats increase total cholesterol and
LDL cholesterol, and lower HDL ("good") cholesterol.
Micronutrients - No Small Feat
Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients that are crucial to many
body processes. Many vitamins and minerals are essential, meaning we
must get them from food or a dietary supplement such as a
multivitamin.
Vitamins are classified as water-soluble or fat-soluble vitamins. The
body doesn't store water-soluble vitaminsexcess amounts are excreted
in the urineso, you need an adequate supply of these vitamins each
day. The body does store fat-soluble vitamins, so regularly consuming
excessive amounts can be toxic.
Water-Soluble Vitamins
B vitamins
B1 (thiamin)
B2 (riboflavin)
B3 (niacin)
B6 (pyroxidine)
B7 (biotinalso known as vitamin H)
B9 (folate)
B12 (cobalamin)
Pantothenic acid
Vitamin C
Fat-Soluble Vitamins
Vitamin A
Vitamin D
Vitamin E
Vitamin K
Minerals are classified as macrominerals or microminerals (also known
as trace minerals) based on how much or little the body needs.
Macrominerals
Calcium
Magnesium
Phosphorus
Sodium
Potassium
Microminerals
Cadmimum
Chromium
Copper
Flouride
Iodine
Iron
Manganese
Nickel
Selenium
Tin
Zinc
Water - Clearly Required for Good Health
Water is often called the "forgotten" essential nutrient, but is
vital for our health. Water helps transport nutrients and oxygen to
cells and carries waste products out of the body. It helps regulate
body temperature, is part of most body fluids such as blood, sweat
and tears, moistens body tissues in the eyes, mouth and nose, and
cushions the organs and joints.
The human body is about 50 to 75 percent water, depending on age,
gender, body composition, food intake, physical activity level and
environmental factors such as how hot it is outside.
The body stays hydrated from the water found in fluids such as
drinking water, milk, juice, coffee, tea and soft drinks. Many foods
such as fruits and vegetables supply water, too.

Re: Goal Weight

True, I know I have at least 5 pounds of extra skin and could
probably go down another pants size if my butt were tighter. I am
wearing a size 30 waist (mens) 501's so I am pretty comfortable with
that and a size 8 in regular jeans so I can definitely live with
that :) My body just still feels so weird to me everytime I look I
find little indentations that I have never seen before and it feels
weird when I run my hands over it (not that I am into touching
myself:) hard to explain but it is still foreign to me.
I can't wait to talk to a plastic surgeon and at least have a consult
I am sure they will want me to wait and let things settle but I
really want to know what they can fix.

Goal Weight

2008-07-14 04:47:41

Lisa L,
You may feel boney and out of kilter right now, but I have seen
people who have lost a lot of weight. At first things seem
disjointed and then after about 6 months + or -, their weight
redistributes itself to its final "resting place". That's why
plastic surgeons want you to wait for a while after you reach your
goal weight to have plastic surgery. No one knows where the fat that
remains will end up. Some of that excess skin may change or you may
even get worse in some areas. You just have to wait and see.
My other thought, and it has been expressed here before, is that
although the BMI calculators show us to be within a certain range,
the excess skin throws that off. We should strive for better
measurements, like below 35" in the waist. That is supposed to be
very critical when it comes to determining your likelihood of heart
disease. If we could weigh that skin, we could almost deduct that
from our scale weight to get our realistic body weight.

Pauleen,
Some people used the pudding powder to add to their shakes to give
them some extra flavor. Or they add flavorings to their shakes or
pudding. You might try experimenting with the different flavors.

WOW Mary,
You are having a great influence in your family. I think that we are always
so affraid that we will not eat things that taste good again if we try to lose
weight. I think that was my mindset. I know that has all changed. I really
appreciate the taste of the new things that I eat...and it takes so little to
satisfy me! I know before I would have gone back for more just to have the
taste, not because I am hungry but now I can't do that physically, but I find
that the memory of what I had the next time is a better one. Does that make
sense? I guess if the gluttony is not there then you are ablet o appreciate
something better. I hope that is what your family is realizing in their
lifestyle changes.

Pat,
I know what you mean about what others eat. I sat in awe watching my sister
and brother in law eat. I will admit though that their way of eating and
what they eat had changed since I have been here. They have cut way back on
starches, eating their protein first, then their veges. They do have a
snack afterwards but it is usually whole grain and fiber foods and they
watch their portion sizes there too. They no longer bring the horrible
foods in to the house. She does still make the home bakes cookies but is
making the oatmeal raisin from scratch and using real oats and spenda in it
instead of regular sugar. He no longer eats the popcorn anymore like he use
to. He takes salads to work and has them for lunch. Even my sister is
trying hard at loosing now. And they do still tend to eat too much when
making toco's or burritos which we are having tonight. I make a open faced
taco without the shell... only beans, meat, lettuce, onion, cheese and
sourcream for a topper. It tastes really good and sticks with me for a
while too.
Everyone is becoming more "food conscience" since I moved down here plus
their doctors are warning again diabetes and high colesterol too so they are
changing their eating habits.

Walmart has them in my area. They are in a tiny bottle surrounded by
cardboard and they are called B12 Dots. They weren't flavored, so I
went to KMart and they have the favored ones. I think all B12 are

Re: frustrated

2008-07-10 09:34:38

Debby,
I think Lisa L said it best...we have to DECIDE to follow the rules.
We have to make sure that we eat protien first and ALWAYS less than a
cup of food at a meal. We have to limit our sugar and white foods.
By limit, I suggest to eat none unless you have a craving and then
only a bite or two. We need to drink our fluids and take our
vitamins and exercise. You are doing the final items, but you need
to take control of your serving sizes and what you eat. What this
period in the process is supposed to accomplish is a NEW ROUTINE.
You have to get into the habit of doing the same thing everyday and
TRY to think of food as a necessity to live, not something to live
for.
I know this sounds all cliche'd but you have to begin forming these
habits and reinforcing these habits because these first 6 months are
THE EASIEST. It will get harder, but if you have your habits set up,
you can more easily stay with the program. Yes, it's hard.....very
hard. I agree. But this is up to you. You have to
decide...strongly decide that you will succeed. I will help you if I
can, but it's up to you to say it out loud and to stick to the rules
(even when they seem to fail you). Good luck!!!

Ilse,
don't stop the fight. there are many people who have been denied but
eventually are able to have the surgery covered by insurance. I did not have
any co-morbidities either, but since my family is littered w/ diabetes, HBP, and
heart disease they figured I was going to go that pathway swiftly at the weight
I was at. I would definately talk to your Dr. about ways to show the insurance
Co that you are a great candidate for the surgery. You have started losing
weight, you dont have the comorbidities and by having the surgery you will
porbably be able to avoid them all together. Whatever you do though, don't give
up because you hit a rough spot. This surgery is all about hitting rough spots.
I am sure you can see that in all of the posts.
Good luck!

Pauleen

Mary,
the B12 isn't absorbed by your stomach very well, that is why it is recommended
to take them under your tonque. after surgery we don't have the intrinsic (sp)
factor in our stomach to break down and absorb the B12. I use the Rexall brand.
They taste good and melt fast.

Debby, it seems we are ALL going to experience weight loss stalls and
fluctuations of a couple pounds. I have been at 35 lbs for a few days now, but
I KNOW it's going to start moving again because it has for everyone else who has
posted that they were at a standstill. Weight fluctuations are normal for
EVERYONE, surgery or not... it's just a fact of life. I know it's easier said

Today has been a hard day for me. I have been concerned for awhile
about the fact that I get hungry and am rarely full. I have worked hard at
stopping eating when I am no longer hungry instead of waiting until I am full.
My calorie intake has been around 700-800 calories a day. I do a spin class
before work and have been walking for 30 minutes at lunch. Yesterday I started
to increase it to 45 minutes and will continue that. I have only lost 2 pounds
this month and this morning one of those was back on the scale. Today at work we
had pizza delivered as a thank-you to our unit. I haven't had pizza since
surgery. I am only 64 days post-op. I thought I could probably eat a little bit
and then be full since I haven't eaten any bread since surgery either. I ate 2
whole slices. That's all I would have eaten when still pre-op. I had no
discomfort at all. I didn't think I would be able to eat that much after surgery
without at least some discomfort. I am so disappointed.
Food has
definately been calling my name but I have been able to avoid the call(until
lunch today). My total calories for the day are probably not too bad. I had a
Kashi bar for breakfast, an isopure alpine punch and cottage cheese for dinner.
I just didn't expect to have to use so much will power this early. I thought
maybe I would lose at least until I was 6 months out but I have definately had a
MAJOR stall and have seen some food cravings come back :(. Sorry this is so long
and depressing but I needed to vent. ( I also get 68 oz of fluid a day so I
don't have any problem there either.)
Thanks,
Debby

Mix In Fruit and Fiber
New research shows that two helpful tools for keeping a normal weight
both start with an F: fruit and fiber. A recent study compared the
eating habits of 52 overweight or obese adults with 52 people of a
normal weight (who were comparable in age, height and gender).
Researchers found that people who ate more fiber had lower body fat,
and that eating more daily servings of fruit was related to lower body

Kashi bar for breakfast, an isopure alpine punch and cottage cheese for dinner.
I just didn't expect to have to use so much will power this early. I thought
maybe I would lose at least until I was 6 months out but I have definately had a
MAJOR stall and have seen some food cravings come back :(. Sorry this is so long
and depressing but I needed to vent. ( I also get 68 oz of fluid a day so I
don't have any problem there either.)
Thanks,
Debby
