Thank you so much for sharing this very important, and potentially lifesaving,
information, Edie. I have never heard of this before, and like you, I would
have put off having it checked out and just waited to see if it went away. You
can bet I won't wait if I ever see something like that now! I hope that the
guys will also read this and educate their wives!!!

Thanks for asking Lizanne, as I said, I love to educate people about
this,

Anyways, this cancer is a very sneaky bugger, in January 04 (like around the
25th) when I woke up I saw a redness about the size of a stick of gum on my
breast, I thought, that's weird, I must have slept funny, the next morning
it was back. I think it was only in the AM, I did not notice it later in
the day, not that I was checking or anything. The next 3 days, nothing, no
problems. The 4th day my nipple was bruised, now I was a bit concerned and
called my OB/Gyn, I was in with her within a couple of days. By the time I
saw her I could also feel thickening of my skin (on the breast). My Dr.
could not feel the thickening but could definitely see the bruise. She told
me to have a mammo (my last mammo was 5 mo's previous). I was leaving for
vaca 4 days later and did not make the apt. when I came back from my vaca I
called to sch. the mammo they could not get me in until right before my
period, I wanted to wait until after my period so I sch for a few weeks
later. In February there were no more changes, just the bruised
nipple. March started out with a rash developing on my hands (no thinks it
was related, I do), a few days later my breast looked pink and was itchy,
and warm and next to my nipple the skin became discolored, it looked like my
nipple leaked onto my skin. By the time I had my mammo around March
15th the above symptoms were there and now my breast was about a cup size
larger than the other one. At the mammo they took around 8 films of my
breast and 4 of just my nipple (man did that hurt!!!) and an ultra
sound. During this time I was also going to the dermatologist because of the
rash on my hands and showed them my breast too. The PA I saw said he had
never seen anything like that, and to use the cream on my hands and breast
and if after a week or so if it wasn't better come in and the Dr. would
biopsy it. My OB/Gyn called around that time to tell me that my mammogram
report showed thickening, no mass, no other problems, but they wanted a
biopsy anyway. I told her I was seeing a derm. about my rash and the PA
told me to come back, could they do the biopsy? She said yes, but she
wanted me to see a breast surgeon too. Well in the middle of all of this
were were going on another vacation. So I had a biopsy done by my derm as
soon as I got back, she took the discolored skin, and did cultures too, she
though I had an infection. The cultures came back negative, but the
skin came back as metastatic cancer, the cancer had leaked from my in my
breast onto my skin, that's what she took off. So the day I saw the breast
specialist, her office called the lab where the derm's biopsy was sent and
they faxed her a copy, and as they say that was that. My life changed
forever.
I was staged 3b, and had a 30% chance to live 2 years, 40% to live 5. (IBC
is only staged at 3b or 4, 4 is what they call metastatic, or throughout
your body). I was one of the lucky ones.
With IBC you go through chemo first, then mastectomy, then radiation. It
was a grueling year of my life, but in the end that is what I got LIFE :o)
Oh as a side note, we have absolutely no cancer in my family history, and I
was 41 when I was diagnosed.
Please learn as much as you can about this cancer, it is misdiagnosed
frequently, they usually believe patients have mastitis. 75% of physician
in private practice will never see this in their career. If a friend says
man my breast is acting weird, it's itchy, hot, my nipple is flattened, or
inverted, I'd say get to the Dr. go on the antibiotics (make them happy),
then insist on a biopsy. It is the only way to get a definite answer. I
have read many stories from other women who went to Dr. after Dr. been put
on antibiotics numerous times, and when they are finally diagnosed they are
stage 4. This is your body, fight for it.
Thanks for listening. Ask any question you want. And remember "you don't
have to have a lump to have breast cancer"
Thanks for letting me share.

Lisa A,
I don't know about anemia, but I am going to have to learn. My
daughter tried to give blood early this week and was told she
couldn't because she was anemic. The next day she came down with the
flu. I don't know if that would have been the cause or if something
else is happening. She has become a fruit-oholic lately, so maybe
she is not getting enough through her food. Besides she is so
sporadic in taking vitamins, that they can't really be helping her.

Mary, you are the image of me or vice versa, except the fact that I

Co-dep. I can also say from what I have read that you are definately
one as well and part of being one is not seeing anything wrong
with 'caring' for the sick alcoholic, to the point that you no longer
have a quality life. I hate to beat on you like this but I think
taking some books out of the library on the subject could really help
and al-anon meetings would help even more. Just so that your next guy

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Info on hydrolyzed collagen protein (as in the protein bullets)

2006-10-29 23:47:00

Lora,
It sounds like it would be a good choice to help heal from surgery. Once I
can drink more maybe I will add a whey protein also. I appriciate the time you
took to research this Thank-you
Debby
Lora <cicerogirl@...
Depsite my nut's assurance that the protein bullets are ok as an
adjunct protein source, every time I hear someone start talking
about whey protein vs, hydrolyzed collagen protein I get uneasy...
just because I don't know enough to have any idea who is telling the
truth, who is just misinformed, and who is bending the truth to sell
a product.
So I have been doing some (admittedly limited) research. I thought
others might be interested in what I found. (I did NOT take any
info from any website, brochure, or article where any specific
product was being praised or condemned because, to me, that probably
indicates that there is a slant to the information. I also ignored
the articles on its use as a weight loss agent.) The two passages
below are pretty representative of what I found.
"As a general protein source, HCP is not generally considered a good
source of "high-quality" protein like you would find in meat,
poultry, fish and in protein powders comprised of soy, egg or
milk/whey proteins. On the one hand, HCP is a "poor" protein source
because it is low in the sulfur containing amino acids such as
cystine (cysteine) and methionine. On the other hand, however, HCP
is the richest dietary source of the primary amino acids that make
up the collagen molecule glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, lysine
and hydroxylysine. As a concentrated source of these collagen amino
acids, HCP is thought to help nourish the collagen-containing
tissues throughout the body tissues such as cartilage, bones,
tendons, ligaments and skin."
And for anyone with arthritis...
"Hydrolysed collagen is simply a modified form of the protein that
has been broken down into smaller pieces by enzymes which makes
the protein easier to incorporate into dietary products and may ease
the digestion and absorption of the amino acids by the intestine.
Hydrolysed collagen is often used as a general protein source in
body building products because it is relatively inexpensive.
Hydrolysed collagen has most recently been used to promote joint
health, nourish cartilage and bones and help athletes recover from
exercise and sports-related injuries.
Hydrolysed collagen helps in the following areas:
- Rebuilds cartilage and bones,
- Speeds injury repair,
- Promotes tissue recovery following exercise,
- Protects against over-use injuries (sprains, strains, tendinitis).
{snip}
No serious adverse side effects are known to exist for consumption
of hydrolysed collagen protein. It is after all, like taking
concentrated bone soup!
As a joint support supplement, hydrolysed collagen protein is
typically much less expensive compared to other popular joint
supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin.
It may be possible, however, that because hydrolysed collagen
protein and glucosamine/chondroitin products target different parts
of the cartilage structure (collagen and proteoglycans,
respectively), one ingredient or the other may work better for some
individuals. It should be noted that your bones and joints have 67
times more collagen than they have glucosamine.
Clinical studies suggest that at least seven to 10 grammes per day
over the course of 30-90 days is needed for reduction of pain in
patients with moderate osteoarthritis."

Thanks for the suggestions. I already have the chapstick I just have to
remember to pack it. I was thinking about having my husband bring my laptop but
I don't know if I will be up to using it. My surgeon says I can go home the day
after surgery if I feel up to it. It seems a little quick but I'll see how I
feel. I went home 2 hours after my gallbladder surgery and I did okay. I'm going
to pack tomorrow so that if I forget anything I have a day to remember it.
I soooooo appreciate all the help from this group and hope that I will have
some help to give after I have had it done.

Hi everyone,
Before I left KY, I saw my surgeon one last time.. I told him I needed
something to help jump start again and he gave me a copy of the "Rotation
Diet". What I am going to do is scan everything in and then try and copy
and paste so everyone can have a copy if they want. It also has a different
type of exercise plan with weights that is a big odd but should work if we
follow it right.
This diet is suppose to help you loose 21 lbs in 21 days but has to be
followed completely. I know it doesn't sound right but my surgeon wouldn't
have given it to me if he didn't feel it would work.
I also have info on protein foods and how to drink protein shakes
correctly.
It is my sisters scanner so if I don't get it done today, I will be sure to
over the weekend. I plan on starting it next week after I buy the correct
foods.

emotions

2006-10-29 01:19:21

Naomi,
I can relate to what you are saying... I just am now starting to think that
part of my problem is I hate conflict and I would rather be stomped on than
stand up for myself.
You are easy going and laid back just like I am and you do not want to
create conflict if you do not have to... but your husband was right in
standing up for you and you should be proud of him for doing so. It wasn't
just the fact that you use a cane or were in pain. The people at the stores
were wrong to say you have to go to another line when you were already
there. If she were closing and had a sign up you didn't see, that would be
one thing but they don't have that right to pick and choose who they want to
service.
Emotions play a big part in this surgery. Some days we are up, some we are
down.. some we just don't care... it is then we need to get out of the
house, take a walk, take in the sights and remember to breath... in and
out. Things will get better if you allow them to.
Give your husband a big hug and kiss and say thank you for no reason at
all.
You will be ok.. hang in there.

Kim,
I can tell you they will give you a pad in the hospital.. a lot of ladies
here did spot or started after surgery.. I did too. My cycle had been very
irratic, never sure when I would get it.. would wait 2 or 3 months then
start again and then only be very light for a couple of days. My PCP told
me my door was shut but not locked yet but it wasn't far off. I had a very
very heavy one 2 weeks or so after the surgery.. last 2 weeks. After that,
a couple of months I had spotted for a few days and then it was over then it
stopped completely. I had accepted the fact I wasn't going to have them
anymore and was happy.. and now this.. UUGGGHHHH... lol. It has made me
retain water and crave salt again which in itself makes you retain water.. I
am taking my water pill to help get rid of it and increasing my fluid
intake. ( no worries about the water pill.. my surgeon said it was ok to
take as long as it isn't every day :-) )

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] surgery statemen

2006-10-26 08:40:31

I'm not upset one way or the other. I just wish everyone would realize no
matter how we lost the weight, we did it to better our health and lives.
Beyond that it really isn't anyone's business. I must tell you, years ago
when I did not even want to consider the surgery I did think it was the easy
way out, I now know differently. Sometimes people need to be educated to
see the other side of an issue. I am extremely pleased that I did it, and
am proud to tell people I did. If I was criticized by someone for doing it,
I would just look at them and say, obviously your not educated about the
whole process or you wouldn't think it was easy. Do you want to know more?
Three years ago I was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer, look it up,
(www.ibcresearch.org) it is the meanest, nastiest breast cancer. I have
worked in the medical field for over 20 years and never heard of this
cancer, it's a breast cancer with no lump. I am now a walking, talking
educator on this cancer. I'd do the same thing for my gastric surgery if
necessary.
Ultimately I did it for me, there's no better reason, nor anyone else
business.
Have a great day all.

Losing weight & then gaining it back and more is bad for you also.
Do you think you could lose the nearly 75 lbs you have to lose to get
to be 200 lbs in the next few months? You can maybe do that with
this surgery. Not all people will....you have to use your willpower
also. This surgery does not stop you from eating. You have to be
the one who decides you will stop. You can get past the discomfort.
You can eat small amounts all day long. You have to make up your
mind to allow the tool to work. This is not an easy fix, but can be
a lifesaver if you use it correctly.

Re: WLS Emotions/Functions

2006-10-25 19:18:18

Joanne,
Wow, so many questions. I'll try answering by my experiences. Being
scared is healthy. I wasn't really aware of the emotional issues
when I had the surgery. Actually, I spent most of my time worrying
about all the things leading up to the surgery and not very much
about the "happily ever after" part. The emotional stuff will go
away. Most of us have not hit the year mark yet. I bet if you asked
Dee or some of the others who are over a year you will find that MOST
of that stuff goes away and is resolved...one way or the other.
My belly....ahhh. My belly gave me great satisfaction. I wasn't
really an emotional eater. I just loved food. Notice I
said "loved". At least in the beginning, that love disappears, at
least in my case. It's almost that food becomes a necessity. You
are concentrating on getting in your protein, oh and water, oh don't
forget the vitamins. Maybe like the cavemen fighting to get enough
nutrition, not really caring about the taste TOO much. And
immediately after surgery, smells will drive you nuts. Everything
has a smell, and some of the smells you used to love, no more.
Pooo....Sharon's topic. I was the exact opposite from everyone
else. I had The "D" word most of the time. That is still how it is
with me, but on a 4-5 day schedule. But when I have to go, it's
RIGHT NOW!! That has been a problem for me. Sharon, Naomi and
others have had a VERY different problem. I don't know if maybe the
lack of my gall bladder could be the culprit, I don't know about
Sharon and Naomi's gall bladder situation.
Pee, depends on how much you drink. I probably only go 3-4 times a
day. I am not getting enough fluids. If you do get enough, your
frequency should increase. Sounds like you need to install a port-a-
pot in your van.
The smoking thing...CONGRADUALTIONS!!! And I mean it. I know how
hard it WAS. Aren't you just so proud of yourself. Cold
turkey....done! Congradulations.

Beer or me? lol

2006-10-25 09:54:42

Hi Joanne,
I appreciate what you have said, and yes, he is living alone with his beer
and I am in sunny FL. I called him the other night about an issue and the
conversation was cordial at best. Is such a shame too.. he has so much to
offer.. if he would just disconnect from the alcohol.
I am not sure if you remembered but he got a DUI back in August and he is
going to his alcohol rehab classes every week @ $25/meeting... plus others
fees not to mention the $750 plus court costs he has to pay. Anyway, he was
suppose to have lost his license only 1 month but when he went back to get
it last week from the courts, they refused to give it back. Said something
about proving his worth or something to that nature.. anyway just needing it
to drive to work and back isn't a good enough reason so they still have it.
It isn't stopping him from driving but he did tell me before I left KY that
he is not longer driving around with open beer in his truck so that is at
least a step in the right direction I think. Only time will tell... At
least I can honestly say I do not love him anymore. I am past that stage
finally.. and I know it was because I left KY.
Please feel free to tell me what you think about the situation any time. I
won't get mad at anyone assisting me with their thoughts.. it is your way of
kicking me in the butt to wake up.. hahaha.

I am not really "looking" for a man per se' but hey, if one shows up... why
not? lol. I need to get away from the kitchen that is for sure. Too much

Skin

2006-10-25 04:41:58

Sharon,
Remember back in that "other group" how we discussed some of the
products that help with firming our skin and keeping it nice? I
remember Ally said her PCP recommended seaweed wraps, once a month.
Well, I use three products that I love and they have done a wonderful
job on my skin. Don't get me wrong, I still have bat wings and such,
but my skin is in great shape. I even use this stuff on my face.
1...Vaseline firming lotion...2...Aveeno firming lotion....3...Dove
Firming lotion. All three of them use different combinations of
chemicals, vitamins, etc. I use them in rotation, one per day. My
face seems to be doing really well, as is the skin on the rest of my
body. If your back itches, have Cal rub some on your back before
bed. It could be fun. My skin is old, so you know if they work for
me, they may work for you also.
There is one more thing I have started lately, and that is using it
again before I go to bed. I tend to sleep in one position, so my
face gets squished the same every night. I am developing some
creases from using the same position. I am hoping that by keeping my
face moisturized, those creases can't form.
Sharon, I also wanted to help you get motivated. For the last month
or more you have been making excuses for not exercising. You need to
take time for yourself. I know it's hard to find a routine that
works, especially since you are working longer hours, BUT you are
very important. Like you encourage Alex, we need to encourage you.
Get your butt in gear, girl!!

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support]Steve & eating

2006-10-25 00:56:28

Steve, my dr wants 3 meals per day and 2 or 3 snacks per day. The meals are
supposed to be 2 oz protein and a little veggies and/or a few crackers. The
snacks are supposed to be protein shakes, skim milk, a slice of cheese, a slice
of lean lunchmeat or any other healthy thing you can think of. I actually was
eating a whole wheat pretzel and my nut approves. I was getting nauseus
between meals and as soon as I stepped up my eating, I felt way better. I also
started losing more!! I am to aim for 1000 to 1200 calories per day. I never
get that high, but I feel way better. Naomi

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] WLS Emotions/Functions

2006-10-24 11:56:47

Great questions... I think it is very important to understand why food controls
us. I am a grazer and I actually feel that is the worst type of person to be
with wls. I am recognizing that and I think it is adding to my emotional
stress. If something upset me before, I would turn to the first food I saw and
EAT. Not too long ago, I commented that my daughter would come home from a
date and I would be eating pb on saltines, Yech...I hate both. I have started
to sew more to occupy myself. I also come to this group and it takes the place
of food. I think this surgery will work easiest for people that ate huge meals,
(I'm not one of them) because it controls how much you can eat at a time. Some
of us dump and that will control WHAT you can eat. I don't dump, but I am
still pretty much following the rules of what I should eat. I guess my point
is this wls is a wonderful, powerful tool but is is our responsibility to use it
wisely. It won't do the work for
you. You MUST take your vits and supplements to maintain heart and bone
health, you must eat and drink correctly. Everyone I know that gained weight
back or didn't lose much really had themselves to blame. (I'm sure that isn't
100%, I just mean all of the ones I personally know). I actually know a woman
that weighs more than before her wls, but she actually grazes on candy bars, and
I do mean grazes!! I think those of you that are one here and are reading and
preparing themselves will really have better results! Naomi

Naomi!!! Oh my goodness. . Do you remember not long ago I had a disagreement w/
my DH and he left and didn't come back all night? It was over something similar
to what your going thru .. He came home and said he told some customer something
rude because he hates working there. .I told him the customer didn't do anything
and I thought what he did was wrong and where the hell was my husband I fell in
love w/???? I know exactly how you feel . .but sit back and think about this. .
we cannot control what others do .. we can only control how we feel and what we
do. . The fact that your DH may have said something to the Pharmacy .. he feels
that he was disrespected by the employee jumping in line first. . I can see his
side of it also .. as I can see where your coming from .. At the moment he got
upset and that woman jumped in line. . he probably didn't have much control over
his anger and that's why he said something. . He may not have the patience you
have . .Men are like that ya know .. But just because we feel one thing. .
doesn't mean we are right or wrong. . and what he felt doesn't mean he was right
or wrong. . it was just feelings that happened and its over. . no need to cry
over them . .or cont to dwell .. nothing can change the past and its done and
over with. . Maybe he learned something from you after it happened and next time
he might not jump so quickly to judge . .I'm hoping that is the case. . I hope
you feel better soon and I am so glad you came to us to vent. . I feel very
priviledged to know that people in this group care about how I feel about
things. . as I am sure you do... .Now go do what I told Cheryl. . take a warm
bubble back and a deep breath :)

Hi Amy-
Just a note...I got an IUD after surgery. It was a hard road those first few
months, but now I love it. No hormonal side effects and it's 99.9% effective.
However, sometimes because of quick weight loss after this surgery the IUD will
become dislodged. Just something to be aware of that my doctor warned me about
several times. However, so far, so good for me!

surgery statement

2006-10-22 01:09:11

Hi,
Can someone tell me why, if someone was able to loose weight without
surgery.. it would be insulting to those of us that have had the surgury?
We all have to realize it doesn't make us less of a person because we
decided to have the surgery as a tool to help us loose the weight. Everyone
knows that we were able to loose some weight without the surgery. Granted,
I doubt I would have lost the 125 lbs I have in a year without the surgery
but I did loose 75 lbs once with watching what I ate and over the counter
diet pills (before they took the good stuff out of them). And yes, I
gained it back again. Who is to say those that lost without surgery won't
gain it back too.. we could also.. that is a known fact.
You should not be upset at others because they lost weight without surgery..
you should be happy for them too. Granted, those that did may not look at
it the same way, but to me, I am happy for them to be able to have lost
weight without the surgery. I think all the magazine was stating is they
didn't have the surgery to loose.
Does this make sense? I am not trying to start a conflict.. just stating my
opinion is all.

Hi Sharon,
Remember I was told I was co-dependent on my now ex husband because I gave
everything to him and didn't take care of myself. I never understood that
but I guess if you give and give and support others without looking after
yourself.. that is what they call it. I just called it caring... I can see
saying food is a crutch but I can't see us being co-dependent on something
that is inatimate... it doesn't have a brain but boy does it have a voice..
lol. Am I making sense?

re: Support groups of all kinds

2006-10-21 07:35:58

Lizanne,
I am glad there are people on here that really care about others. I myself
have been seeing myself going the other direction because it is so easy to
graze. With going out to job interviews, I am finding I am stopping any
place to get something to eat.. even fast food. It is so easy to do but it
also isn't agreeing with me. I am not throwing up.. but it is causing me to
have to use the restroom a lot if you catch my drift. I have protein bars
here and drinks too but do not take them with me for some reason.
With all that is going on, I need to get refocused before I start adding
sizes instead of loosing them.
Thanks for the insight...

Re: post surgery pregnancy

Pat,
It was this group that wrote about the woman who was pregnant when
she had the surgery. And the child was okay. that would have scared
me. I know what I went through after the surgery, and to know that a
baby is depending on you under those circumstances would have flipped
me out. Afterwards I would think that every little thing the child
had would be my fault.
Amy, I had mentioned the IUD in some previous posts. I loved mine
and used it from the time I was 21 (I'm almost 54) until I was almost
31. It was removed on Dec 27 and I had my daughter on Aug 30. After
a period of time, I had it re-inserted and kept it until I was around
50. I just love IUDs. No worries. I hope the same holds true for
you. Just make sure you have your period during both insertion and
removal. Otherwise, there are no guarantees.

post surgery pregnancy

2006-10-20 07:14:09

Amy, I saw you post this in another group, but I will answer here...
There are some who say you should not have a baby after this surgery, but my
surgeon said that some people have this surgery BECAUSE they want to get
pregnant and can't because of their obesity. he recommends waiting two years
before becoming pregnant.
On the other side, someone posted recently (I forget which group) that a woman
was pregnant AT THE TIME OF HER SURGERY, but they didn't know it. That is NOT a
situation anyone wants to be in, but for her it worked out. She had a healthy
baby, but had to be monitored constantly to be sure she was getting enough
nutrition to support the pregnancy.
Your Secret Sister <vickisecretsister@...
It is sounding like the IUD thing is going to be the best option with
least side effects. My family thinks we need to be done having kids, as we have
one of each (boy and girl). But I still feel the urge at times to have a baby,
as my other children grow. Hubby says he wants us to be done, too. But a tubal
is so permanent. Plus, I have already had 2 c-sections. I don't see my hubby
stepping up and offering to have himself "fixed!" 8-)
When I finally get approval and get in to see the actual surgeon, I guess I will
discuss this with him and get his take on it, as well.
Thanks so much to all who replied!

Re: Thank you for noticing

Cheryl,
It's amazing how fast you are losing. Isn't it great to step on the
scale everyday. It was like that for me after my plateau, but then a
really horrid thing happened....I gained weight. I don't know how,
truly, but I did. Then standing on the scale everyday was really,
really awful. My scale isn't all that accurate, but I still step on
it most mornings. I don't count that as my actual weight, I have to
have my mental weigh-in at the gym.
Your daughter is right about the shampoo. I saw something last night
about Pantene. I only caught the tail end as I was on the phone. My
hair is still falling out like crazy. It has not diminished. I
can't figure that out. Gobs of it fall out everyday. I am nearly
bald, so how can that be? I did have thick hair in the back....it
must be coming from there. That's the only explanation. My daughter
says she can see baby hairs starting. That doesn't make sense to me
either. How can it be falling out and growing? To be honest, I
don't need an explanation, I just need it to stop falling out. I
will get some protein at GNC this weekend. See if a new tactic will
work. Also, I may start having a shake for dinner. One I make for
myself, not prepackaged.
This post sounds a lot more upbeat than your last one. If you need
us, we will be here. Oh, unless it's the middle of the night...not
as many people checking messages then, as Sharon knows. But wait
till morning and we'll get back to you.

Lizanne,
Thank you for noticing that 1) I had not been on in awhile and 2)
that I have lost quite a bit of weight. I finally reached my first
goal which was to get under 300 again. It has been a while since I
have been under 300. I am wearing clothes that I have not worn in a
year and a half. And if I try something on and it is a little too
tight this week I know that next week it is going to fit just fine.
I was hoping to get to my first milestone by Christmas which was my 2
month mark, but I missed it. It did not bother me too much, but I
was anxious to get working on the next milestone which is 250. I
figure by the end of March I should reach that goal. It will be
remarkable, then the sizes should really start melting away. I am
looking forward to it.
I am lucky right now because I do not have to work outside the home.
I get to stay home and take care of the kids, although it would
sometimes be nice to go to work and have a break. I am very
fortunate, however, I might start looking for a job before too long.
I am not sure. My son says "no". He does not want me to have a
job. He is standing next to me reading this as I type. He is in
first grade and he is starting to read and spell everything.
I am glad that you are doing well also. Has your hair started to
grow back any? My daughter said there is a new Pantene shampoo to
help in hair regrowth. I am not sure about it, but she was joking
about getting it for my husband because he has a thinning area on the
top of his head.

I am glad that you are doing well also. Has your hair started to

Cute Joke

2006-10-19 08:37:52

Ain't it the Truth!!!
A woman goes to the doctor for her yearly physical.
The nurse starts with certain basic items.
"How much do you weigh?" she asks.
"115" she says.
The nurse puts her on the scale.
It turns out her weight is 140.
The nurse asks"Your height?"
"5 foot 8" she says.
The nurse checks and sees that she only measures 5' 5".
She then takes her blood pressure
And tells the woman it is very high.
"Of course it's high!" she screams"When I came in here I was tall and
slender!
Now I'm short and fat!"

Sex in the City

It was me. I just thought that there are times we can change our
mindset. I have always been proactive except when I was young and in
better shape. Then I would have been too embarrassed to be first.
Now that I am in worse shape, I figure...what the heck, so they turn
me down flat....their loss.
But Mary, I think is a searcher. I was just suggesting she should
TRY a new approach. It might be fun to be chased, especially since
she is slightly more beautiful now. That's all I meant.

Diabetes and WLS

2006-10-18 09:46:39

Amy,
I thought that people with diabetes were getting this surgery
eventhough they aren't obese. That for some, you were "cured" almost
as soon as the surgery was complete. That the part of your stomach
that produces a hormone....oh, to be honest, I am not all that
acquainted with the reason why. I just know I have read that the
surgery "cures" diabetes. I was borderline diabetes, but do not have
any problems anymore with that.
This surgery is difficult. There are a lot of drawbacks that you can
encounter. The psychological part seems to be a big thing, and most
of us have dealt or are still dealing with this. Getting enough
nutrition is tough, but can be done. Learning how to treat yourself
right is another stumbling block. We have to learn to take care of
ourselves. And then there is the knowledge that unless we follow the
rules, we can fail at this. Please spend your pre-surgery time
researching this surgery, not only the part that leads up to getting
approved, but what happens after the surgery is done. That you will
have to deal with for the rest of your life.
As far as others criticising you for trying to get the
surgery....this is your body, this is your decision, stay away from
the negative people as best you can, and do this for yourself...if
that's what you decide. Also, see if you can find a live support
group. This group is great, but in the beginning when there is so
much to learn, a live group will answer questions you weren't even
aware you needed to ask.
Researching this surgery is the best thing you can do for yourself.
Good Luck!!

Mary,
Last year, on my birthday...oops two years ago on my birthday in
January, I got my period. I hadn't had it since May of the year
before. Maybe you weren't really menopausal, you were just
overweight. A lot of people who are overweight, don't get periods
anymore. Then when they lose the weight....oops, it's back again. I
hope that isn't true for you.

Amy, I am in El Paso!! Maybe we can meet when you come here :)
If you are going to have your surgery at William Beaumont AMC, I have to tell
you... they have quite a waiting list. I began this process with the DIGMA on
May 1, and it will probably be close to a year before I finally get my surgery.
I have finished with all the support group meeting, psych, nutritionist, gall
bladder ultrasound, endoscopy, mammogram, and blood work requirements... now I
just wait. They are doing the lap bands much faster, but elective surgery takes
a back seat to active duty. There may be chance that your surgery will be less
of a wait than mine since your husband is active duty (mine is retired), but
elective surgery is still on an ER space available basis.

Re: this if VERY OT

Naomi,
This is not off topic. This group has probably stirred up some
emotions in you lately that you have been hiding from yourself. We
have been writing about taking care of ourselves. Making ourselves
important and valuable. My thought, and I could easily be wrong, is
that you are realising that you don't want to be a person who is just
waiting out your life, you are a person who wants to have more
satisfaction. I think you are crying over that. That this thing
your husband has done, right or wrong, has you in a tizzy because you
realise how different the two of you have become.
I am probably over-analysing this, and could VERY easily be wrong. I
just think you are not crying constantly from this one act your
husband did. I do not have a solution for you. Maybe you could take
a weekend and visit your grandkids, just get away from home and give
yourself some relief. If you want, you can come visit me in MD. I
am just going to the movies and to GNC. I would love to have you
visit.
I do not mean to hurt your feelings. If I am wrong, then I am
sorry. From what I have read lately, this is what I THINK. I am not
a therapist of any kind, I am a listener, usually.
Lizanne

this if VERY OT

2006-10-16 01:47:26

This is very off topic, I will start by saying I am like most of you
and am quite emotional since surgery. My husband went to Walmart to
get a prescription filled a few days ago and he was waiting in line
when an employee of Walmart jumped to the front of the line and said
she was on her break and was in a hurry. He came home angry and I
said it was wrong, but what's the big deal??? We are retired and
frankly we have lots of time. Yesterday I was playing my old messages
on the answering machine and he had a message from the pharmacy mgr
saying he was calling to discuss the problem. I got really angry and
told him he was a hateful, selfish horrible excuse for a human being.
I was furious. I'm not saying the woman was right, but all I could
think was she could have been a mommy of 3 kids and had to rush home
right after work and now she is going to be yelled at because of my
husband. I actually went to my bedroom and slammed the door and
haven't really spoken to him since. Am I crazy? I just think people
don't understand how rough other people's lives can be, maybe she was
just a jerk, but maybe she had a good reason to be pushing if front of
everyone else. I actually keep crying over this and I can't seem to
move past it. Naomi

Re: Feeling out of the loop and depressed

2006-10-15 16:54:03

Cheryl,
You are special. My birthday is in January also, but it's the end of
the month. I know what you mean. Women always seem to be the ones
who have to sacrifice, especially if she is a mother. I think you
should do something for yourself. You know you are special, and with
money being tight, it's always easy to find an excuse for NOT doing
something special for yourself, BUT you are worth it. Even if it's
just window shopping, or visiting a secondhand store for new
clothes. Pedicures or manicures usually don't cost much. It's
something that makes you feel good, even if you have to do it for
yourself. I don't know what you like, but maybe even a bubble bath
with the door locked and candles lit might be something you would
cherish.
You may whine here all you want. I certainly have whined enough for
everyone, and I understand that sometimes you just have to get it off
your chest. You don't want to deal with the repercussions of blowing
your top in front of your kids. Take care of yourself, and indulge a
little, just for you.

Cheryl, it's great to see you back. The after holiday depression is normal and
I guess with all the other changes in our lives it will be harder to deal with.
Happy birthday, my 4 yr old granddaughter's birthday is Sunday and I know what
you mean about celebrating everything else!!! About your finances, it is a
great idea to write down every penny you and your family spend for 1 month. It
does 1 of 2 things --- -- it will tell you where it's going and/or it will
shock you how much more you have if you track every penny. It is an old MBA
experiement and it really helps, but everyone that earns and spends has to
track. Naomi

has been so long since I have been online.
I did not realize it had been so long. The last few months have been
tulmultulous and to say the least it has taken its toll on everyone.
I am feeling very depressed lately. No I have not gone back on my
medicine yet. I need to get it filled because I am not feeling any
better. I just feel kind of left out and as if I don't matter right
now. Saturday is my birthday and as usual there will be nothing done
for me. I know that sounds selfish, but I finally figured out why my
birthday is something that I feel should be acknowlegded...it is the
only day of the year about me. I share all the other holidays with
everyone else. However, my birthday comes so close to Christmas that
it is hardly ever celebrated. We are always trying to recover from
the huge Christmas for the kids, and everything comes up at this time
of year too, so that the recovery actually does not end until June,
so I usually miss Mother's day too. It is done just in time for
Father's day and the girls' birthdays and my husband's birthday. I
guess I feel overlooked and underappreciated right now and I am just
venting and whining here. I just want to get it out, but I don't
want anyone to feel bad about it.
It does not help my situation that right now money is tight. We make
more money than ever and I have no idea why we don't have any. I
look at the budget and it just doesn't seem to make sense. I add it
up and the money is gone. I am very thankful everyday that at least
everything is paid for and taken care of. We don't have to worry
about food or rent or the car. These are things I am very grateful
for, but it is just hard to understand sometimes how it gets this way.
But I am done whining. Love to everyone. At least I know I always
have friends to turn to.

Re: Info on hydrolyzed collagen protein (as in the protein bullets)

2006-10-14 09:30:58

Lora,
Thanks for the research. I have artritis, so if I go to the movies
this weekend, I will head to GNC for a protein bullet or two.
I understand your concern when someone recommends a protein bullet to
others in the group. I will do it when it seems that some protein
would be better than no protein. Then there is the debate about
protein derived from veggies or meat sources. The veggie protein is
incomplete, but if you mix enough veggies, then you may be able to
get enough to form a complete protein. Meat protein is complete in
itself. BUT, why do we need a complete protein? Can't we just mix
and match?
I'm glad you shared what you found.

Info on hydrolyzed collagen protein (as in the protein bullets)

2006-10-14 07:08:54

{snip}

Off Topic-Bargain Gas

2006-10-14 01:15:38

Will bargain gas harm your car?
You're driving down the street with the gas gauge pointing to empty.
Scanning the prices on the boards at the gas stations, you notice
that the national brands are all around $3.25 a gallon for regular.
Then, you approach Joe's Gas 'n' Go. To your delight, good ol' Joe is
selling regular for $3.15.
You think about stopping at Joe's, but wonder: "How good is the gas?
Will using Joe's bargain gas harm the performance or reliability of
my car?"
The short answer is "no."
At a time when motorists are trying to shave even a few dollars off
their fuel bill, shopping some of the lesser-known brands may be a
good idea.
The entire nation's gasoline comes from various regional refiners who
then sell the product to a wide variety of retailers. The
Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, mandates that all gasoline
meet certain standards for detergent additives that combat potential
deposits on an engine's valves.
In addition, gasoline is periodically tested at the pump to make sure
it meets minimum octane ratings for regular, mid-range and premium
levels.
That means Joe's gas must perform to a certain standard and likely
won't harm your car.
But that doesn't mean Joe's gas is the same as what you'll find
coming out of the pump at Chevron, BP, Amoco or other brands.
At the fuel depot, where gasoline from the refiner is dispensed, a
lot of brands mix in their own formula of additives that they say
goes beyond what the federal government requires.
Some manufacturers say that today's high-tech engines require higher-
standard gasoline than the EPA benchmark. Audi, BMW, General Motors,
Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen have worked with major gasoline
companies to set a standard for what is known as Top Tier Detergent
Gasoline.
Gas companies that meet these standards include QuikTrip, Chevron,
ConocoPhillips, Shell, MFA Oil Company, Kwik Trip/Kwik Star, The
Somerset Refinery Inc., Aloha Petroleum, Tri-Par Oil Co., Texaco,
Petro-Canada and Sunoco-Canada.
Whether using Top Tier gasoline makes a substantive difference is
debatable. AAA contends that any brand of gasoline is safe. In
addition, the deposits that Top Tier gasoline helps prevent generally
don't cause problems for an engine until after 100,000 miles.
To date, no manufacturer has threatened to void the warranties of
drivers who fail to use Top Tier gasoline.
Drivers who are still concerned but who don't want to buy the higher-
cost gasoline can visit an auto parts store twice a year to buy a gas
additive. For example, Chevron's Techron additive, which the retailer
says is in every gallon of its gas, can be bought in a bottle for
less than $10.
So, a 20-gallon fill-up at a Chevron or another Top Tier station that
costs 10 cents a gallon more than the rate at Joe's bargain gas means
a driver would pay $2 more to get those additional additives.
Assuming one such fill-up a week, a driver would save $104 a year by
buying at Joe's, a savings that would more than cover a twice-a-year
purchase of a bottle of detergent additive.
While on the subject of gasoline, drivers should stop paying for
gasoline with a higher octane rating than their car needs.
Check the owner's manual to see what the manufacturer recommends --
for most vehicles, the octane rating is 87, which means regular
grade. Buying 89, or 92 or 93 octane gasoline will not make your car
go faster or get better gasoline mileage. One exception is high-
mileage engines that experience "knocking'' -- that pinging noise
when you accelerate. You may be able to eliminate such noises by
stepping up in octane.
But for the vast majority of consumers, spending 20 cents or more to
put higher-octane gas in the tank is an absolute waste.

Hi Terri,
Congradulations on your weight loss.
I had that eating problem also when I first had my surgery and it
lasted about 2 months. I think part of the problem may have been
depression. I did the exact thing you are talking about. Most people
just suggest that you force yourself to eat. Isn't that
funny....force yourself to eat...did you ever think you would have to
do that? If you can't force yourself, try concentrated protein like
the bullets you can get at GNC or online. They have concentrated
protein in a large test tube looking container. Take about a half of
container at a time.
Also, walking may help. Depression, or an "I don't care" attitude may
develop if you just sit around all day. You need to get yourself
moving. It gives you a better attitude. I'm not saying you should
walk/jog/run a marathon, but getting moving improves your mood. I
found a big difference when I went back to work. I hated going back,
but my energy/mood improved greatly, and I began doing more of the
things I should be doing for myself.
Now comes my warning...do something about your nutrition or you will
pay later on. I didn't feel like eating, drinking, taking my
vitamins, or walking. I have lost most of my hair now. You can pay
later for not getting the nutrition you need now.
Take care of yourself. I know even advice like this just made me
mad. I wanted to yell at the computer....but I don't want to!!! You
are important so remember to do the things your NUT told you to do and
you will improve rapidly.
Good Luck,
Lizanne

no kidney infection, but still not feeling well

2006-10-13 06:44:48

My urine test showed no infection, but I am still not feeling well...
I still have that pain off and on, and now I'm just starting to feel
very run-down. I'm still eating ok and getting enough protein... it
just feels like I'm about to come down with the flu or something.
So I will probably continue to just pop in and out...

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Has anyone considered more diet stuff?

The only thing that increases my loss is to increase lean protein, increase
water and decrease the carbs. Naomi

down. Yeah, I am still losing but I
really want it to bulster up again....Has anyone considered or tried
something with a metabolism booster or anything? I don't want
something that will kill the little appetite that I have, but perhaps
just like that stuff that you get at the 7-11 that keeps you awake for
your exams in college. (I can not remember what it is called - college
was a LONG time ago). Anyway, as I write this I feel really guilty and
naughty for even considering it. But, perhaps if someone else has
thought about it or tried it or is finding it helpful or ANYTHING, you
can shed some light on the subject.
WAIT - I only want to discuss this as a POST OP subject. We've all
done the pharmacy diet pills pre surgery.....
Thanks

Re: Al-anon Questions

2006-10-12 10:07:33

I think you meant to write over-eaters anonymous here and they run
along the same principal but al-anon is for friends and families of
alcoholics. (Probably friends and families of addicts as well but I
am not 100 % sure) Over-eaters anonymous is for people who eat too
much but not specifically involved with alcoholics/addicts.
The reason I thought of al-anon was that Mary had said her X had
chosen to live with his beer instead of his relationship. I have also
had some screwed up relationships and do consider myself a co-
dependent (Which means that I could very much benefit from steady al-
anon meetings) because my father was an alcoholic and a couple of X's
are as well. From what I have read in the past, many times co-
dependents are heavyset because we will turn to food as a comfort
when our alcoholic turns to booze and gets himself into trouble.
sex, or all of those
I am kind of confused by this quetion because I'm not sure if co-
dependents can actually have co-dependents of their own. I think the
main alcoholic in the picture can make an entire family turn into co-
dependents though, if say the father is coming home drunk as a skunk
and getting into altercations with the non-drinking mother in front
of a family full of kids. I know that co-dependents are also known to
turn to booze and drugs as well as food for comfort. Not sure if over
sexing is one as well but I suppose anything is possible.
Not neccesarily, some women turn to food as a result of being
sexually abused. I think a small percent of women have hormone
troubles that cause weight gain, some gain weight because they have
overweight parents, some gain out of depression and I think some gain
just because we are a 'super-size' nation with tons of good (and BAD)
food readily available. It was interesting at my doctor's seminar he
said the human body was not constructed well and I thought how wrong
that statement was, we are perfectly constructed to be hunters and
gatherers. Unfortunately, we haven't HAD to hunt or gather since this
country was being newly settled. Now hunting is done for sport and
considered barbaric and gathering is done for fun with a worry about
bugs, pollution and bacterias! I'm sure our gathering ancest
